I had been to private school all of my elementary and middle school years. In January of 2017, my family made the decision to switch me and my brother into Keller ISD. On my first day ever of public high school, I was seated next to this guy who wouldn't stop talking to me. I vividly remember we had a journal prompt to write about our Christmas break, and were supposed to discuss afterwards. Going into my first day, I assumed it would be the typical HS class like in TV shows: the typical just keep to yourself and like you don't really have to discuss your work, very chill, just everything like my private school wasn't. The moment he noticed I stopped writing and he was also done, he said very enthusiastically, "what'd you do over the break, I've got to get to know you if we're going to be sitting next to each-other all semester." The super nerdy boy who I really wanted nothing to do with from the get-go turned out to be the guy I couldn't get enough of, and after seven years of having him in my life, I finally get to marry my best friend.
One of the "benefits" of my last name is that I always sit in the back of the class when a teacher decides to seat the class alphabetically. Either due to this fact, or the fact that I was the class clown, I sat by myself near the back of the class. Returning to school after Christmas Break, my English teacher Ms. Smith pulled me aside. She said "Cameron, we have a new student arriving today. She has NEVER been in public school before. I am putting her next to you, please do not make me regret it. Show her around the lunch area and make sure she has friends... But Cameron, don't freak her out by being... you...". With this knowledge in hand, I made it my mission to freak her out as fast as humanly possible. After our morning prompt, I made sure to learn all about her Christmas holiday, introduce her to all my friends and continue talking her ear off until she most certainly wanted to move schools and was re-evaluating the entirety of our country's public school system. Success. Now, after 7 delightful years I get a best friend who can share my last name and be put in the back of the class with me, as a "Yancy".
