Durango is a 1.5 hr drive to Silverton. Below are details on The Silverton Steam Train, a possible means of getting to Silverton if you prefer not to drive.

Montrose Regional Airport

Montrose is a 1.5hr drive to Silverton, including Red Mountain Pass. If you like free checked bags, you'll be happy to know that Southwest Airlines does fly into Montrose.

Denver International Airport

Denver is at least a six hour drive from Silverton. Keep in mind, there is often mountain traffic leaving Denver on a Friday and returning to Denver on a Sunday which could slow you down.
