On the morning of January 18, 2024, two unique moments occurred simultaneously in Paris. First, the city awoke to a fresh blanket of snow covering its' cobblestone streets, and second, Nic and Kita exchanged rings and heartfelt vows at the Pont de Bir-Hakeim.
FROM KITA I'll never forget the first time I met Nic. I was sitting in a studio in The Village, the magical and legendary recording studio in Los Angeles with my then manager, and now dear friend, Jeff Greenberg. Jeff was a champion of my music and talent from the beginning, ever since he caught a show at The Roxy and invited the band and I to come down to the mythical Village; I would end up recording many times in those hallowed halls (an experience both equally surreal and ecstatic); however on this FIRST trip to the Village I would be introduced to the man I would eventually marry over ten years later. I was playing our latest song for Jeff, St. Blessed, a song that would factor into my destiny far more in the future than I could have known at the time. Jeff's excitement was palpable, he was pacing the studio as he listened to the new song, stating how there was something really 'different' in it and it really had 'something'. Out of nowhere he said "wait here, I'll be right back; there's someone I'd like you to meet." Jeff, in his usual burst of uncanny energy, disappeared through the studio doors and reappeared a few moments later with a man behind him. All I saw were his shoes: long toed red crocodile shoes! My immediate thought was "this guy is phenomenal". As the shoes, along with the man in them, sauntered into the room, Jeff introduced him as Nic Harcourt, (someone who apparently knew what he was talking about when it came to new music). Jeff sat him down and played him our song, and Nic bopped his head along to the tune (seemingly enjoying himself, although he could have been being polite); when it finished, he said "I think you've got something really interesting there; especially that voice, that voice is special." And with that we thanked him, and he walked out of the studio just as quickly as he had appeared. It would be months before Nic and I would cross paths again. Nic and I began working together, and despite our best efforts, it seemed impossible for both of us not to fall head over heals in love with each other. Worlds collided that day at The Village, two people from totally different planets crashed into each other and I'm forever grateful that Jeff ran out of that studio to pull my destiny in from the hallway.
FROM NIC Sunday July 16 2023, I woke up, and as usual, reached for the phone to check football/soccer results; and also saw the news that Jane Birkin had passed away. As I read about her life, I was reminded of the wildly romantic love affair she shared with the French 'enfant terrible' avant garde artist Serge Gainsbourg, and the song they made in 1969 "Je t'aime, moi non plus". Looking at pictures of them in Paris with the Eiffel tower in the background, I found myself turning to Kita and these words just fell out of my mouth: "Let's go to Paris?" Kita: "Don't Joke" I followed up with "Let's go to Paris and get married" Kita: "Are you serious"? (I think we were both surprised) I said I was serious, and thank goodness she said yes! Six months later we eloped, to Paris. Our own romantic journey continues.
