The Sayville Ferry began the Fire Island run in 1894. The Sayville Ferry Service provides safe passage to Fire Island's central communities of Cherry Grove, Fire Island Pines, Water Island and Sailors Haven/Sunken Forest, from River Road in the South Shore hamlet of Sayville.

The 1,600 acres of Heckscher State Park on the south shore of Long Island offer visitors a number of outdoor activities. Large open fields are used for field sports and picnicking and four miles of paved, multi-use trails attract bicycle riders, walkers, runners and nature lovers. In addition to stunning views of the Great South Bay with Fire Island as the backdrop, visitors can see a variety of birds and other wildlife. Enjoy bay swimming, boat launching, sail boarding, kayaking, and canoeing.
This state park maintains 3,473 acres of land and water for the protection and propagation of game birds, fish and animals. The preserve also has 50 miles of hiking, bridle, cross-country ski and nature trails, as well as freshwater fly fishing (by permit only) on the Connetquot River.
