Rachel and Matt's story began in the fall of 2016 when their greek houses were paired for homecoming week. They met on a brisk autumn night when the couple found themselves partnered off for Yell Like Hell auditions. Eager to spend more time with Rachel, Matt asked the co-chair to be her partner in the group dances. A sorority sister who lived in Matt's dorm vouched for his genuine character. During Yell Like Hell practice they grew to know each other. Their first date was to a special showing of the Pokemon Movie. At the end of homecoming week they planned to go 'campaniling'. Tradition states that a student officially becomes an Iowa Stater when kissed under the campanile as the carillon bells toll midnight. Unfortunately there's a thing called 'Wilkens time' and they did not make it to the campanile before midnight. On the walk over Matt asked Rachel to be his girlfriend. The rest is history and after a year of long distance, moving 600+ miles, adopting two cats, and navigating a foreign country together they were engaged on August 26th 2023 in Tokyo Japan. They will be married in a private ceremony on May 10th in Avon Colorado.
