Travel and Lodging

The Wedding Website of Evelyn McLean and Milan Griffes
We're getting married under a pair of giant maple trees at Elkenmist, a farm & land project stewarded by some friends. You can learn more about the project here: https://elkenmist.com Elkenmist is situated in a small community called Skamokawa (which means "fog on the water" in the Chinook language). It's nestled in a river valley that flows into the Columbia River, about a 90-minute drive from Portland. Wahkiakum County, where Elkenmist is located, is one of the least populous counties in Washington. Cathlamet, the only incorporated town in the county, is about a 15-minute drive from the farm. We recommend planning to stay the nights of August 15th and 16th to get the most out of the weekend! A variety of lodging options are given below. If you're having trouble figuring out lodging, please don't hesitate to reach out! We're happy to help.

Hotel

Hotel Cathlamet

69 Main Street, Cathlamet, WA 98612
 360-795-0100

The Hotel Cathlamet is about a 15-minute drive from the farm. We've reserved the whole hotel so tell them you’re with us to book a room!

Hotel

Skamokawa Resort

1391 Washington 4, Skamokawa Valley, WA 98647
 360-795-0726

Skamokawa is about a five-minute drive from Elkenmist.

House Or Rental

Camping at Elkenmist

There are many beautiful places to camp on the grounds of Elkenmist! You can bring your own gear to camp out on the 100+-acre property. We will have dinner for everyone arriving on Friday night. Breakfast and brown bag lunches will be available for campers on Saturday.

Rental Car

Turo

If you're flying into Portland (PDX), the most straightforward thing would be to rent a car on arrival. For this, we recommend either using Turo or renting from one of the legacy car rental services at the airport.

Travel Note

Carpooling

If you are interested in exploring carpooling options, or otherwise would prefer not to rent a car, please let us know! We may be able to help match you with another guest to head out to the farm together.

FAQs

Question

What is the dress code?

Answer

The dress code is farm formal! Please dress in semi-formal, colorful clothing that will be comfortable to wear outside. Dress in a favorite color or color combo – don't wear black, white, or dark tones. Elkenmist is a working farm, so we want to make sure everyone is dressed to spend the day (and night!) outdoors. That means leave your high heels at home! And it's not a good venue for floor-length dresses. A hat & sunglasses for the afternoon might be nice, as well as a light wrap or sweater for the evening. Although Elkenmist is in a rainy part of the world, August is the dry season and it is unlikely to rain while we are there. There is a wood-fired sauna & cold plunge on site, as well as a creek running through the property, so bring a towel and swimsuit if you wish to partake. We recommend bringing a change of clothes for dancing, if you're planning to stay for the afterparty! Festival wear encouraged.

Question

What time should I arrive for the ceremony?

Answer

Please arrive at Elkenmist by 3:30 PM on Saturday, August 16th.

Question

Are kids welcome?

Answer

Yes they are! We won't be able to provide any childcare, but Elkenmist is a very fun place for kids to enjoy.

Question

Is there transportation to and from the hotels to the ceremony?

Answer

TBD. Let us know if you prefer not to rent a car and we may be able to arrange some carpools/shuttles to and from hotels in the area.

Question

Is there parking at Elkenmist?

Answer

Yes!

Question

Can I bring a date?

Answer

Maybe! Please check in with us if you'd like to bring someone.

Question

When should I RSVP by?

Answer

We would like to have the final headcount by July 1st.

Question

Are you registered somewhere?

Answer

We don't need any home goods, as we've lived in our house in Portland for two years already. Our landlord recently offered us the option to buy our house, so contributions towards the down payment would be most welcome! You can find more info in the "Registry" section of this site.

Question

Are there other events that I should know about around the wedding?

Answer

Yes! We encourage you to come to the opening gathering on the evening of Friday, August 15th, and to stick around through brunch on Sunday, August 17th.

Question

Will campers have access to bathrooms and showers?

Answer

Yes! There are some rustic outdoor toilets for campers to use, and guests will have access to some bathrooms in the main house too. There is a beautiful outdoor shower by the sauna as well.

Question

Do campers have to bring their own food?

Answer

Nope! We'll provide dinner at the opening gathering on Friday night, a continental breakfast and picnic lunch on Saturday, dinner at the reception on Saturday night, and brunch on Sunday!

Question

When should I arrive on Saturday if I'm not staying overnight at the farm?

Answer

You're welcome to come by anytime after 1:00 PM on Saturday. Elkenmist is a beautiful place to explore, and there will be a cafe area to hang out at before the ceremony starts.
