It all started one balmy summer night in Silver Lake. What turned into an online coffee date (from the free dating site) at Casbah Café, became a parking ticket on Sunset, then a trip around Echo Park Lake on those paddle swans. We did a bunch of annoyingly LA stuff in between then and now, where we've created a life full of laughter, fun, tacos, dogs, succulents, beer, mezcal, and more tacos. Nothing is more important to us than tacos, but our family and friends come a close second. We're excited to share that love (and tacos) with you as we celebrate our union, and can't wait to see you at the rancho!
We're trying to keep this mostly an adult event. It's outside, so we don't want your child to be picked up by a hawk or coyote in the darkness or something.
Cocktail attire; cowboy hats welcome but not required. The wedding will be outdoors in late Baja spring, but bring a light sweater in case there's a breeze.
Yes. If you're trying to keep your return border crossing chill, bring a passport.
Refer to Travel section of the site for recommended hotels. Most hotels on the list are 5 minutes down the road from the ranch. Santuario Diegueño is the furthest on the list, but is only about 10 minutes away. There are also plenty of Airbnb rentals available.
Please go to the Schedule section of this page and click the map or link for the exact location of Quinta El Manzanito. You should be able to get directions on your phone from that. If for some reason that's not working, follow these instructions: 1. If coming from the Tecate border crossing, head straight until you hit the park three blocks down. 2. Turn right onto Avenida Benito Juárez and go straight for about 4.5 kilometers, minding the slight curve left at the Cruz Roja/Red Cross hospital. 3. Make a right at Cuchumá, the stoplight at Tacos Dumas. If you go past the Oxxo/Pemex gas station, you've gone too far. 4. Go up Cuchumá past where the paved road ends. Once on the dirt road, go about 1/2 a kilometer and make a left onto Lomitas del Cuchumá, where there will be a sign on the telephone pole that reads "AYM." 5. Keep driving until the road ends. That's the ranch.
No. Tecate is a relatively small town, so you can park your car at the many parking lots before you cross into Mexico and just walk across. There should be taxis waiting as soon as you cross into Mexico, and Uber should also be working to take you to your hotel or the wedding. Most lots charge $5 a day. If they're full, try the lot at the map link below and pay at the automated pay station. If you don't see any taxis, you can walk straight down two blocks until you hit Miguel Hidalgo Park. You should find plenty of taxis there. https://maps.app.goo.gl/EN16wcVX8G3jpYRh7
The Tecate-US border is open from 6am to 10pm. The borders at Otay and Tijuana are open 24 hours.
The wait time to cross back into the US from Tecate on a Sunday afternoon is roughly about 3-5 hours. You can avoid the line by waking up super early, like 6am-7am, parking across the border at an aforementioned lot, and then walking back to enjoy the day in Mexico. Walking back across usually takes less than 5 minutes. The wait times in Otay and Tijuana can be roughly the same, though Otay always seems to go a little quicker. Use that SENTRI or Ready Lane if you have it. There is no SENTRI or Ready Lane in Tecate.
Check with your provider to confirm, but US insurance usually covers you up to 25 miles into Mexico, so you should be good if you're staying in and around Tecate. Any deeper into Baja, and we suggest buying insurance. It's not that expensive for the per-day rate, and you can just Google "Mexico car insurance" to find coverage.

The first thing you should do when you cross the border, is try the best tacos on the planet at El Güero. Go-to order (if you're really hungry): 1 quesadilla de harina de asada 1 taco de tripa 2 tacos de adobada (and if you're super, super hungry, 1 taco de suadero) Una Coca Lo primero que hay que hacer cuando llegue a Tecate es probar los mejores tacos del mundo en El Güero: Su orden (si tiene mucha hambre): 1 quesadilla de harina de asada 1 taco de tripa 2 tacos de adobada (y si tiene hambre de a de veras, 1 taco de suadero) Una Coca
Walk in the steps of a tiny Miguel Contreras, who braved the busy counter as a wee lad at this Tecate OG taquería, wondering if the taquero was going to chop off his fingers because he was too busy looking up and taking orders. Get the asada burrito. If the line is too long, go up the street to the second location.
Parque Miguel Hidalgo is Tecate's main historic square in the heart of its downtown, just two blocks from the border. Walk around the shops of the only "Pueblo Mágico" along the border for local food and crafts. Go to the legendary Bar Diana and feel like you're in the first episode of Mayans M.C., one of our favorite shows despite its terrible acting and writing.
Have some Tecate straight from the source. Craft beer it ain't. Tome Tecate directo de la fuente. ¿Cuál cerveza artesanal?
Check out one of the best gift shops in Tecate and Alejandra's favorite "chingaderitas" store in the world. This is where Miguel first bought Alejandra a gift, a weird little felt figurine of a dead guy which still hangs from her rear view mirror.
If you have a predilection for hipster coffee like we do, grab a latte or cold brew at KiloLibra to enjoy with your bread from El Mejor Pan de Tecate a block over. The coffee is great, and they have some cool shirts for sale.
This place lives up to its name. Before you cross back to the U.S., ruin your keto and buy a bunch of conchas. Wait for the warm birotes con jalapeños to come out of the oven. You won't regret it.
If you can bear the hangover early Sunday morning, head over to La Pasadita for some ridiculously delicious lamb barbacoa. Tell them Miguel from "La Misión" sent you.
Drive up the hill and experience some Mexican-Italian food and an amazing view of the city, but make sure to follow the directions on their website. You need to make reservations.
If you're making a long weekend out of your trip to across the border, head to El Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico's wine country, for amazing food, wine, beer and scenery. If you can get a reservation, check out our favorite winery there, Lomita. It has a beautiful view of the valley and really good wine.
If you do the Valle thing, try to make a reservation a few weeks ahead of time for Animalón, literally Alejandra's favorite place in the universe. You can brag to your foodie friends you went to Javier Plascencia's best restaurant. If you manage to get a spot, ask to be seated under the ancient oak tree. It's beautiful and romantic, and the food is amazing. Go big and order as many courses as you can fit, though 5 is probably more than enough. Then have a shot of the rattlesnake-infused sotol. It's absolutely disgusting, truly. Do it for Miguel. Sabe horrible. Hágalo por Miguel.
If you can't swing Animalón, then Finca Altozano on the same ranch is a very apt consolation. It's another Javier Plascencia joint, so you know the food is amazing. We don't usually eat octopus because we believe they are the descendants of aliens from outer space who will one day return to exact revenge on everyone who partook in a nice cóctel de camarón y pulpo, but the grilled octopus is the rare exception, it's that good! Feed a dog, too.
If you're coming in or leaving through Tijuana and have an hour to spare and are looking to run into some punks, stop at the dive bars next door to La Plaza del Zapato for some beer, pulque, mezcal and burgers. We spent many a night drinking and dancing at the several antros who it seems are required by law to play reggaeton, and reggaeton only. Please drink responsibly. Consuma responsablemente.
If you do the TJ thing and the governor's brother hasn't shut down the brewery because he thinks it's getting a little too loud on the patio (true story), stop by Insurgente for some of the best craft beer in Baja.
If you're tired of that over-condimented, overpriced, oily stuff that passes for Tijuana-style birria in LA, you can try actual Tijuana birria. It's now our first stop when we cross into TJ. Just make sure to pay close attention to your navigation or you'll be stuck in a one-way loop for 20 minutes.
