Our Story

While we've been telling everyone that we met in a tree, we actuallyyyy met on Hinge (surprise!). After a while of texting back and forth in September 2023, Roland disclosed that he would be moving from Phoenix to "Slicetown" Utah the next February. So Marah asked, "So... should we call it quits or go on a date asap?" Needless to say, we went on a date (kind of) asap. Our first date was a picnic at Margaret Hance Park with bagel sandwiches from Marah's favorite, Copper Star. Roland wooed Marah with every epic climbing story he had and some sweet stories of how his mom inspired him to become a pilot, and that's really all she remembers of the conversation from the first date. You can ask Roland what he remembers but last we heard it was, "Wow I'm on a date with a gorgeous girl and it's...going well!" A second date (art museum and rooftop sushi) was planned for 3 days later, which goes to show just how well that first date was in fact going. At one point, the topic of long distance came up and both Marah and Roland said "do NOT want to do that." Marah took this as "okay don't get too attached," until Roland took her on a squadron bar crawl and after said, "Well I wanted to introduce you as my girlfriend...." Fortunately for him, Marah was not really succeeding at not getting too attached, and after talking things over with some close friends (who said she would be crazy not to go for it with this boy that was literally perfect for her), they "made it official" the morning after running through the night for a Ragnar trail race. While we still definitely don't WANT to be doing long distance, it is so much better than the alternative. The times we spend together are the BEST of times, climbing, running, picnicking, skiing/snowboarding, traveling, surfing, and biking, etc. Marah's mom was a bit worried that our hobbies were too reliant on our current physical capacity, so we tried out paint by numbers, pottery, legos, and eating ice cream, and found we have fun with those too! Roland proposed at Chasm Lake on Longs Peak on June 22, 2025--the perfect spot. Marah grew up hiking Longs most years with her family, and Roland had climbed "the Diamond" above Chasm Lake with friends multiple times. He said he was always blown away by the beauty of the lake with the Diamond behind it and knew it would be perfect. After the proposal, they were greeted by their families at a brewery in Golden, which was so so special. It has been a wild ride since of deployments, medical school, and life's twists and turns; we're so grateful to be on the ride together and for all the support of our family and friends. We can't wait to get married and to celebrate the first of the best days of our lives with you!!

Travel

For out of state/country attendees you can fly into HDN (Yampa Valley Regional Airport) which is about 30 minutes out of town. You can also fly into DEN (Denver International Airport) and then make the 3.5 hour journey up to Steamboat. Both airports have rental car services and bus/shuttle services. Once you're in town you'll likely stay near downtown or the ski resort. Either location is great and it's easy to travel between the two parts of town, even without a car (our ceremony is downtown while our reception and cocktail hour are near the ski resort). Steamboat offers a free bus line that runs between the two areas (or it's just a 5 minute drive if you have a car). The bus starts around 6am and is available until between 11pm and 11:45pm depending on your direction. Uber isn't reliable at all but there are some taxi/shuttles available for booking ahead of time. Please, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to either of us.

Travel Note

Getting between DEN and Steamboat

If you're planning on coming from Denver Airport you can: 1. Rent a car and drive the 3.5 hour drive to Steamboat (keep in mind that if you drive back to the airport on Sunday, there can be lots of traffic from people seeing the fall colors). 2. Book a direct shuttle service. 3. Take the train to Union Station and book a ticket on the Bustang (Craig-Denver line) that leaves from there.

Wedding Party

Mary Miller

Maid of Honor

How in the world does one encapsulate 27 years of friendship into one blurb? Marah and I were friends before we were even born (thanks Mama Millers). And even though we have had our periods of distance, there is no one who I feel is more like my sister from another family than Marah. We planned our weddings together when we were what, like eight? And it looks so different from what either of us pictured but I’m so beyond words thrilled to be a part of this with her. Her and Roland truly are a pair that helps each other grow and I can’t wait for the beginning of the rest of their story!

Emma Miller

Bridesmaid

Hi e’rebody! I’m Emma, Marah’s little sister, which basically means we spent 30% of our childhoods being best friends and 70% being devoted enemies. I have fond memories of sweeping the swingset while playing “house,” climbing on rocks camping and listening to her practice for her stepsister role in Cinderella. Even though I was furious whenever Marah woke me up, stomping into our room at the egregious hour of 10pm, I always wanted to be her when I grew up. I copied her in nearly everything: volleyball, IB, choir, theatre, adrenaline adventures…Now that we’re both adults and spend much more time as besties, Marah is still one of the coolest people I know. I have so much fun with her, wether we are running a half marathon, baking 18 pies for thanksgiving, or giggling far too much during the Easter Vigil. Being the unmarried one in the family, I’ve gotten a special look into Marah and Roland’s relationship as it developed. I am happy to say Roland is almost as fun to be around as Marah and the two of them together are the most fun. I got to be there the day Roland proposed, in the shadow of Long’s Peak after having born the weight of the ring up to Chasm Lake. Definitely one of the most entertaining and emotional mornings of my life. I love you both and am so excited!

Natalie Lavrisha

Bridesmaid

Hi! Im Marah’s oldest sister. She is the answer to years of prayers for a sister. The moment I found out she was a girl was quite momentous! I know this goes without saying, but she was well worth the wait! One summer we ran 100 miles together! Since now she runs 100 miles in 5 minutes, and so do Emmy and Roland and David (to name a few of her running mates), sadly I can’t claim that I have run the most with her anymore. 😆 I am so proud of Marah for so many reasons including, but not limited to, her ability to crochet tons of flowers while simultaneously acing med school and crushing ultra marathons. I am endlessly grateful for the incredible auntie Marah is to my girls. One time, she held my baby while painting the other girls’ nails and also making ice cream (all at once naturally, since it’s Marah.) Marah, I am so excited for you to begin the adventure of marriage. You are an adventure queen, but I dare say that this one will top all the rest. You are going to love it. I wish all of God’s blessings to you and Roland as you embark on the journey together. I love you so much!

Pippa Bailey

Bridesmaid

I’m Roland’s sister. We met in the mountains? I’m pretty sure that came first? But we really bonded in the bathroom at Ro’s graduation dinner❤️🤪 then we started crocheting and the rest is history! Marah’s actually more than I could’ve dreamed of in a sister for me, an aunt for my future kids, and a partner for my baby brother but don’t get me wrong I’m not excited that I have to get into running ultras if I want to spend more time with them now.

Sarah Dodrill

Bridesmaid

The first time I met Marah was high school volleyball open gyms, during the summer before freshman year. All I remember is that I did not like her. My mom, however, had other plans because she was such a big fan of Deanna, so I had to become friends with her daughter. Boy am I glad my mom had better insight than me! Over the past 14 years Marah has become one of my favorite people and I cherish our friendship so much! Whether we're eating Magill's ice cream or walking with elephants in Thailand, every time is a great time with Marah. I am so excited for her and Roland as they enter into this next chapter of life and cannot wait to see the adventures in store for them!

Jaime Hoerr

Bridesmaid

One of the best things to come from dating my husband is my friendship with Marah! While we met playing frisbee, we became close once we lived down the street from each other in Omaha and spent hours watching Love Island and playing Schocken together. Whether it’s planning a last-minute trip to ski in Vail (despite me only having skied once before) or sitting on our couch knitting next to a stuffed goose, there’s never been a dull moment between the two of us!

Marah and I should have met 27 years ago… we are both from Colorado, the same age, and have a shared love for anything and everything outdoors. Better late than never though, I finally got to meet Marah when we started Med School together in Phoenix in 2022. Again, it took a few months before we just happened to be next to each other on a class hike that we finally became friends. 4 years later, countless trail runs, a marathon, many late nights studying, many long days hanging out at the pool, and I am so happy to say that I finally get to say that I have met one of the best people in the entire world— my dear friend Marah. Marah is the coolest, kindest, most adventurous, compassionate person in the world, and I am so stoked that she met the 2nd coolest, kindest, most adventurous, compassionate person in the world in Roland. Love you both so much, and I can’t wait for you to get to start your lives together!!
