How We Met

Justin swiped right hoping Madeline might be the one. Madeline swiped right doubting much would come of it. There’s a version of this story where it never happens. Madeline almost didn’t open the app that week. Justin almost picked a different night. But somewhere in the small arithmetic of late March 2025, two profiles found each other, and a sushi spot in Evanston was quietly chosen as the unlikely setting for everything that came next. Justin walked in certain, in the quiet way you can be certain of something you can’t yet name. Madeline walked in bracing for disappointment, half-expecting to be home by nine. Dinner stretched. Then it stretched some more. Outside, the night had turned unexpectedly warm. It was one of those random gifts March in Chicago sometimes hands over, a pocket of spring tucked between cold weeks. So we walked. Block after block of sleeping Evanston, slower than necessary, taking the long way on purpose the way people do when they don’t want an evening to end. The lake when we reached it was dark and still, the water still winter-cold. Neither of us minded. By the time we said goodnight, Madeline’s skepticism had quietly dissolved, and Justin’s hopeful hunch had hardened into something steadier. We’ve been inseparable ever since.

How He Proposed

Almost a year later, we packed for New Orleans to celebrate Madeline’s birthday. Neither of us had ever been, and the city had been sitting in our imaginations for months. Then the tornado-ridden storms came… Flights cancelled. Plans dissolving by the hour. We could have rebooked. Could have stayed home. Instead, late that night, we threw bags in the car and pointed it south through Illinois, through the long quiet middle of the country, past truck stops in the small hours, past sunrise glowing pink in the rearview. When New Orleans finally appeared, it appeared all at once. Live oaks heavy with moss. Wrought-iron balconies tangled with vines. Music spilling from doorways before noon. The river slow and brown and ancient. The air smelling of beignets and rain and something older. We were exhausted. We were dazzled. We were exactly where we were supposed to be. On the evening before Madeline’s birthday, Justin mentioned a dinner reservation. But first, a walk to Jackson Square. Only a block and a half from our Airbnb in the French Quarter. The kind of throwaway suggestion you don’t think twice about. The square glowed. St. Louis Cathedral rose impossibly white against the dusk, steeples lit from below, the gardens in front clipped into perfect symmetry. Justin led Madeline across the street, up to the overlook, and turned. Madeline stopped, breath caught. Justin took Madeline’s hands. The words came easily as they had been months in the making. Then there was a knee. And a ring. And the world went very small and very quiet. Madeline said yes before the question was finished. A moment later out of the soft chaos of laughter and tears and disbelief a woman stepped forward with a camera and introduced herself. Justin had thought of everything. What followed was a slow, joyful, slightly delirious wander through Jackson Square at golden hour: every spot another picture, every picture proof that the swipe a year before, the long road trip, the wrong-then-right plans… all of it had been leading exactly here. The photos live on the Gallery page.

Things To Do

A handful of our favorites for the time you spend with us close to the venue, in the city, and the lovely places in between. North Barrington sits about 45 minutes northwest of downtown Chicago, so a city day trip is easy if you'd like one. However you spend the weekend, we're so glad you're spending part of it with us. Hours, prices, and websites listed here may shift between now and the wedding, so please check directly with each spot before you go.

LAGO Lake Zurich

350 North Rand Road, Lake Zurich, IL 60047
, (224) 286-3567

Celebrity chef Fabio Viviani's hometown restaurant and one of the most ambitious dining rooms in Lake County. Equal parts steakhouse and Italian, LAGO does dry-aged ribeyes, hand-cut pastas, and a wood-fired Bistecca alla Fiorentina alongside thoughtful seafood and seasonal specials. The tableside caprese is a signature and worth ordering. The atmosphere is upscale but warm, and Fabio himself often makes the rounds. Reservations strongly recommended, especially Friday and Saturday. Valet parking available. Weekend brunch (Sat & Sun, 10 AM – 2 PM) is a lovely option for the morning after.

Francesca's Famiglia

100 East Station Street, Barrington, IL 60010
, (847) 277-1027

The local outpost of a beloved Chicago-area Italian group, Francesca's Famiglia is the kind of place where the bread keeps coming, the pastas are generous, and you can show up in jeans or your wedding-weekend best. Expect Northern Italian classics (handmade pasta, wood-grilled fish and chicken, a thoughtful wine list) served in a cozy room steps from the train station. A reliable choice for groups of any size. Reservations recommended on weekends. Great for rehearsal-adjacent dinners or low-key family meals.

Region Kitchen and Bar

718 West Northwest Highway, Barrington, IL 60010
, (224) 848-4005

Region is one of the best local go-tos for an upscale night out. Think bang bang cauliflower, filet mignon meatloaf, perfectly seared fish, and a sticky toffee pudding people drive in for. The room is warm and intimate without feeling fussy, and the service has a regulars-of-fifteen-years quality to it. Reservations strongly recommended, especially Friday and Saturday. Closed Mondays. Save room for dessert.

Restaurant Noe

117 South Hough Street, Barrington, IL 60010
, (224) 655-2342

For a true special-occasion night, Noe is one of the most exciting restaurants in the Chicago suburbs. Chef Robert Noe Gadsby (a London-trained chef with serious Los Angeles credentials) runs an intimate seasonal tasting menu that diners describe as Michelin-caliber, with the chef himself often introducing each course. It's the kind of meal you'll talk about long after. Tasting menu only; book well in advance via their website. Two seatings nightly. Worth the splurge for an anniversary, milestone, or an early wedding-weekend treat.

Neoteca

130 South Hough Street, Barrington, IL 60010
, (847) 382-1330

A newer addition to downtown Barrington, Neoteca brings a contemporary Italian sensibility: Neapolitan-style pizzas from a wood-fired oven, fresh pastas, lighter small plates, and creative seasonal specials. The space is bright and modern with a wine-bar energy that works equally well for dinner or just a glass and a pizza at the bar. Walk-ins are usually possible at the bar; reservations easier for larger parties. Closed Mondays.

Phase Three Brewing - Lake Zurich

932 Donata Court, Lake Zurich, IL 60047
, (847) 320-1910

One of Lake County's most respected craft breweries, Phase Three is known for hop-forward IPAs, barrel-aged stouts, and creative collaborations that sell out fast. The taproom is laid-back and welcoming, with plenty of indoor seating, an outdoor space when the weather cooperates, and food available for delivery from a partner kitchen. Family- and dog-friendly; live music on select weekends. A great low-key option the night before the wedding.

Roaring Table Brewing Co.

739 Illinois 22, Lake Zurich, IL 60047
, (224) 662-4562

A husband-and-wife brewery with a 90-seat taproom built around a live-edge bar and a fireplace lounge. Roaring Table makes everything from English cask ales to crisp lagers, hazy IPAs, and barrel-aged stouts. Their kitchen turns out Chicago tavern-thin, New York, and Detroit-style pizzas that genuinely hold their own next to the beer. Closed Mondays. The Detroit-style pies and the cask ales are signatures. A great low-key option for the evening before or the morning after.

Historic Downtown Long Grove

145 Old McHenry Road, Long Grove, IL 60047
, (847) 634-0888

Just east of Barrington, Long Grove is a pedestrian-friendly historic village with a wooden covered bridge, brick-lined sidewalks, and a tightly curated mix of independent shops: gourmet popcorn and chocolate, an olive oil tap room, vintage and gift stores, an Irish import shop, and a few charming cafés. The kind of place to spend an unhurried two or three hours. Most shops open by late morning. Stop by the Visitors' Center for a walking map. Especially lovely on a sunny May afternoon.

Independence Grove Forest Preserve

16400 Buckley Road, Libertyville, IL 60048
, (847) 968-3499

One of Lake County's signature forest preserves, Independence Grove is built around a sparkling lake with miles of paved walking and biking paths, a fishing pier, picnic groves, and a seasonal beer garden overlooking the water. Kayak, canoe, and pedalboat rentals are available, plus a tour boat that loops the lake. Lake County residents enter free; non-residents pay a small parking fee. Boat and bike rentals are first-come, first-served, so go early on weekends.

Crabtree Nature Center

3 Stover Road, Barrington, IL 60010
, (847) 381-6592

A peaceful Cook County forest preserve with a network of trails through prairie, wetland, and oak woodlands. No bikes allowed, which keeps it lovely and quiet for walking. The nature center has small exhibits, friendly staff, and free binocular loans for birdwatching. Late May is peak season for wildflowers and migrating songbirds. Closed Fridays. Trails are unpaved and can be muddy after rain, so wear sturdy shoes. Good for an easy 1- to 3-mile loop.

Volo Museum

27582 Volo Village Road, Volo, IL 60073
, (815) 385-3644

A genuinely one-of-a-kind, family-run destination about 30 minutes north. Part car museum, part Hollywood memorabilia, part antique mall, part dinosaur park. Highlights include the DeLorean from Back to the Future, the Family Truckster from Vacation, an ambitious Titanic exhibit, and over 300 vendors in the antique mall. A surprise hit for kids and grown-ups alike. Plan 3 to 4 hours minimum if you want to see it all. Tickets are à la carte by exhibit; the auto museum alone is the most popular pass.

Makray Memorial Golf Club

1010 South Northwest Highway, Barrington, IL 60010
, (847) 381-6500

For golfers, Makray is an excellent option just south of downtown Barrington. A tree-lined, well-conditioned 18-hole layout with quick greens and plenty of character. The clubhouse restaurant is also surprisingly strong if you'd rather skip the course and just have lunch on the patio. Tee times book up on weekends, so reserve at least a few weeks ahead. Walking is allowed; carts available.

Millennium Park & Cloud Gate

201 East Randolph Street, Chicago, Illinois 60601
, (312) 742-1168

Twenty-five acres of public art, gardens, and architecture in the heart of downtown. The undisputed star is Cloud Gate (a.k.a. The Bean), Anish Kapoor's mirrored sculpture that reflects the skyline in surreal, distorted curves. While you're there, walk through Lurie Garden, watch kids splash in the Crown Fountain, and admire Frank Gehry's Pritzker Pavilion. Late May often brings free outdoor concerts. Free, open daily 6 AM – 11 PM. Closest L stops: Washington/Wabash, Madison/Wabash. Easy to combine with the Art Institute next door.

Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise

111 East Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL 60601
, (312) 922-3432

Run by the Chicago Architecture Center aboard the First Lady fleet, this cruise takes you down all three branches of the Chicago River while expert volunteer docents tell the stories behind 50+ landmark buildings. It's been voted the country's #1 boat tour by USA Today readers and is genuinely the single best thing first-time visitors can do. Book in advance! Weekend cruises sell out, especially in late spring. Bring a light jacket; it can be breezy on the open deck. Sunset cruises are unforgettable.

Skydeck Chicago

233 South Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL 60606
, (312) 875-9447

Ride one of the country's fastest elevators to the top of Willis Tower (formerly Sears) for a 360° view spanning four states on a clear day. The "Ledge" (glass-floored boxes that cantilever out from the building) is the bucket-list moment. The exhibits on the way up are surprisingly engaging; budget about an hour total. Buy timed tickets online to skip the line. Sunset slots are most popular and book up first. Photographers should aim for the hour just before dusk.

Navy Pier

600 East Grand Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611
, (312) 595-7437

Stretching nearly a mile out into Lake Michigan, Navy Pier is touristy in the best sense with the iconic Centennial Wheel, plenty of restaurants and bars, sightseeing and speedboat departures, and some of the city's best skyline photos at the far end. A great low-commitment afternoon, especially if you have kids in tow. Free to walk around; rides and attractions priced separately. Speedboats and architecture cruises also depart from here. Park at Navy Pier garages or take the free trolley from State Street.

The Art Institute of Chicago

111 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60603
, (312) 443-3600

Home to American Gothic, Nighthawks, a stunning Impressionist collection (Monet, Van Gogh, Caillebotte's Paris Street; Rainy Day), the Thorne Miniature Rooms, and a deep modern wing. Even casual museum-goers tend to leave a little awestruck. The building itself (half Beaux-Arts, half Renzo Piano modern) is worth admiring in its own right. Closed Tuesdays. Open until 8 PM Thursdays. Plan at least 2½ hours. Café and a more upscale restaurant on site if you want to make an afternoon of it.

Field Museum

1400 South Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL 60605
, (312) 922-9410

A grand natural history museum on Chicago's lakefront Museum Campus. The headliner is Sue, the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex ever found, but the Egyptian galleries (with a walk-through tomb), the Native American Hall, and the rotating special exhibits are equally memorable. Easy to combine with the Shedd Aquarium next door. Skip the lines by booking online. The Museum Campus has its own Metra/CTA stop; parking is paid and limited. Allow 3 hours to do it justice.

Shedd Aquarium

1200 South DuSable Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL 60605
, (312) 939-2438

One of the country's premier aquariums, with the Caribbean Reef, the Amazon Rising rainforest exhibit, and an Oceanarium home to beluga whales, dolphins, and sea otters. The view from the building's outdoor terrace, looking back at the Chicago skyline across the lake, is one of the most photographed in the city, so don't miss it on your way in or out. Buy timed-entry tickets online. Tuesdays often have extended hours. The dolphin and beluga aquatic show is included with general admission but can be busy on weekends.

Lou Malnati's Pizzeria

439 North Wells Street, Chicago, IL 60654
, (312) 828-9800

You can't come to Chicago without trying deep-dish, and Lou Malnati's is the most beloved version with buttery crust, tall walls of sausage and cheese, sweet tomato sauce on top. The River North location is centrally located, walkable from most downtown hotels, and reservations help you skip the wait. Order a small Caesar and "The Lou" and you're set. Deep-dish pies take 30–45 minutes to bake, so order as soon as you're seated. Multiple locations across the city; River North is the easiest for visitors.

Portillo's & Barnelli's Chicago

100 West Ontario Street, Chicago, IL 60610
, (312) 587-8910

Portillo's is a Chicago institution and the easiest way to knock off two local classics in one visit: the Chicago-style hot dog (no ketchup, please) and the Italian beef sandwich, dipped or dry. The River North flagship has a fun retro-Chicago interior. It's fast, affordable, and exactly what most visitors mean when they say they want "real Chicago food." Order at the counter; food comes out fast even when busy. The chocolate cake shake (yes, with actual chocolate cake blended in) is a non-negotiable.

Chicago Botanic Garden

1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe, IL 60022
, (847) 835-5440

One of the country's great botanic gardens, sitting roughly halfway between North Barrington and downtown Chicago. Twenty-seven distinct gardens stretch across nine islands, with rose, English walled, Japanese, and prairie gardens all in full late-spring glory. Plan to spend a half-day; bring comfortable shoes and a phone full of camera storage. Free admission; parking is paid (cheaper to reserve in advance online). The on-site café is fine; better to picnic or eat in nearby Highland Park.

The Morton Arboretum

4100 Illinois 53, Lisle, IL 60532
, (630) 968-0074

If the Botanic Garden is for flower people, the Morton Arboretum is for tree people. Sixteen miles of trails wind through more than 200,000 cataloged trees from around the world, dotted with the famous oversized Daniel Popper troll sculptures hidden in the woods. Late May means full canopies, blooming dogwoods, and lilacs in peak fragrance. Buy timed-entry tickets online in advance, especially weekends. The Ginkgo Restaurant on site is genuinely good for lunch. Bring binoculars if you're a birder.

Lincoln Park Zoo

2001 N Clark Street, Lincoln Park, IL 60614
, (312) 742-2000

Founded in 1868, this 35-acre zoo sits inside Lincoln Park just north of downtown. Admission is completely free, year-round. The lions, gorillas, and giraffes are the headliners, but the gardens, conservatory, and the surrounding park trails make it just as much a place to wander as to look at animals. A perfect 2-hour stop on a sunny Saturday. Free entry, paid parking. Combine with brunch in nearby Lincoln Park or Old Town. Stroller-friendly throughout.

Frank Lloyd Wright Home & Studio

951 Chicago Avenue, Oak Park, IL 60302
, (312) 994-4000

Wright lived and worked in this Oak Park house for 20 years designing more than 150 buildings here while raising his family. The guided interior tour is excellent, and a walking tour of the surrounding blocks reveals one of the densest collections of his Prairie-style homes anywhere. A wonderful half-day for anyone curious about architecture or design history. Tours are timed and limited, so book ahead. Combine with the Unity Temple tour nearby and lunch in downtown Oak Park, easily reached by Metra or the CTA Green Line.

Brookfield Zoo Chicago

8400 31st Street, Brookfield, IL 60513
, (708) 688-8000

If you want a more substantial zoo experience, Brookfield is worth the trip out to the western suburbs. Highlights include Tropic World (the largest indoor zoo exhibit in the country), the gorgeous gorilla habitat, the dolphin presentations, and a cheerful little train and carousel for younger visitors. Easily a half-day. Paid admission and parking. About 30–40 minutes from downtown by car. Strollers and wagons available to rent on site.

Woodfield Mall

5 Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg, IL 60173
, (847) 330-1537

If you forgot something at home, want a rainy-day plan or a return-flight gift run, or simply more retail options than a single afternoon can absorb, Woodfield is the answer. Anchored by Nordstrom and Macy's, it has more than 250 stores spanning everything from luxury (Burberry, Louis Vuitton) to everyday standbys, plus a sizable food court and a handful of sit-down restaurants. The closest big mall to North Barrington and an easy stop on the way to or from O'Hare. Free parking. Open until 9 PM Friday and Saturday, 6 PM Sundays. Plan at least 2–3 hours to do it justice; longer if you actually intend to shop.

Rivers Casino Des Plaines

3000 South River Road, Des Plaines, IL 60018
, (847) 795-0777

For guests who want a late-night option that isn't another bar, Rivers is Chicagoland's busiest casino with slots, table games, poker, sports betting, and a handful of restaurants and lounges, all open 24 hours. It's especially convenient for anyone staying near O'Hare, and a fun spot for a small group to spend a few hours after the rehearsal dinner or before flights home. Must be 21+ with valid ID. Free parking and valet available. Sign up for a free Rush Rewards card on arrival, which usually comes with a small free-play credit. RC Supply Co. on site is the strongest food option.
