Her perspective: I first met Luke at the Christendom Summer Program back in 2020. As much as his last name stuck with me, his mullet back then was what made the real and lasting impression. "The guy with the mullet" is how I remembered him until I really got to know him, Freshman year of college. The mullet was gone by then (thank goodness), but it would make a cameo later on Sophomore year. Our real "meet cute" happened on my birthday, which fell on the day of Christendom's annual barn dance. Sure, the Virginia Reel has become a cheesy Christendom rite of passage — but it’s how Luke ended up asking me to dance for the first time. In a blur of about four years, we made some of the sweetest memories together: travelling Europe, Luke living in Arizona for a summer, and graduating from college together are just a few of many. Like every couple, Luke and I have had our ups and downs, but I can humbly and confidently say that we have grown and changed so much during our relationship. God-willing, we will never stay the same and will constantly challenge each other to grow in virtue and into the people God intended. Saying 'yes' to Luke's pure and intimate proposal on April 17 was the easiest decision of my life. I cannot wait to marry him. The love of my life. The one I know will dedicate his life to getting me to heaven. His perspective: Mary and I first met in the summer of 2020 at the Christendom College summer program. Our introduction at the summer program was rather brief. We probably said “hi, nice to meet you,” danced once or twice, and then did not think much of each other for the rest of that week, much less the next year. The next time I saw Mary was when I entered Dr. Cuddeback’s barn in the very beginning of our freshman year at Christendom. The barn was packed with people and, quite frankly, was a little intimidating. But a young Luke Luckey was not going to let that fear stop him from finding the cutest girl in the barn and asking her to dance. That mission did not take long at all - thanks to the bright yellow bandana that Mary was wearing. I walked right up to her, asked her to dance, and proceeded to steal her night away by asking her to dance with me time and time again. I would be lying if I told you that our story was always as sweet as a romantic dance in the sweltering humidity of that freshman year barn dance. After hanging out all of the time freshman year and dating for most of it, I broke up with her the following summer. I was unsure about my life and honestly, a little scared of commitment. But when I saw her for the first time again sophomore year, I knew I had made the biggest mistake of my life. So, I spent the next six months trying to re-earn the title of “boyfriend”, which I accomplished in January of 2023. Despite some hard times, I have always found comfort knowing that a perfect marriage is not the union between two perfect people, but the union between two people who refuse to ever give up on each other. The fall semester of 2023 was an adventure. We studied abroad together in Rome, traveled through Italy, to Poland, and Czechia. We have so many amazing memories together from things as exciting as riding mopeds through Cinque Terre, to watching The Office together on a lazy Sunday night (usually procrastinating assignments worth half our grade, but hey, we made it). I must say, I was pretty nervous on that sandy beach when I asked Mary to be my wife. Not nervous because I thought she would say no, but because I knew that this would be a once-in-a-lifetime moment that would be frozen in time forever. Just me and her. And I wanted it to be as special as possible, and it was. Since we got engaged, Mary and I have both become better versions of ourselves and the love we have for each other has only grown stronger. Mary is my best friend, and I cannot wait for the rest of what God has planned for us. And if I had the chance to relive it, I would pick the girl with the yellow bandana every time.
