How We Met

January 2, 2021

We had both just moved to Miami — chasing sunshine, good vibes, and pretending we weren’t sweating 90% of the time. We met via online dating, which means fate... and algorithms. Luis met Meghan's cats. They stared him down like tiny furry landlords, and proceeded to smother him with attention. Our first date was peak Miami: paddleboarding through crystal-clear water, casually spotting a manatee like it was no big deal (but it was). We wrapped it up with a beach bike ride in South Beach, which was equal parts romantic and us pretending we were not getting heat stroke. Then Luis made Arepas for Meghan, and she blacked out from joy. Next thing she knew, she was planning the second date and Googling “how to politely demand more Arepas in Spanish.”

Getting to Cartagena

We recommend flying directly into Cartagena’s Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG) which offers convenient access to the city. Consider arranging a private transfer through your accommodation or using Uber, which is convenient and reliable and will help avoid the unsolicited ride offers upon exiting the airport.

Travel Note

Getting around

Once you're in Cartagena, you'll find the city is very walkable — especially within the historic Old Town and nearby neighborhoods. A rental car isn’t necessary and can actually be more of a hassle than a help, thanks to narrow streets and limited parking. Walking (or catching a quick Uber) is the way to go!

Private Home Rental

Using Airbnb to book a stay within the walls of Cartagena, Colombia—often referred to as the Walled City or Ciudad Amurallada—is a unique and atmospheric experience. Here’s a detailed overview of what you can expect: ⸻ 🏠 Types of Stays 1. Colonial Mansions: Large, historic homes with courtyards, balconies, and colonial architecture. Ideal for groups or families. 2. Boutique Apartments: Modernized interiors within centuries-old buildings. Often come with stylish decor, AC, and rooftop access. 3. Rooms in Local Homes: Great for cultural immersion. Usually more affordable and hosted by Cartagena locals. 4. Luxury Villas: High-end properties with pools, staff, and chef services. Often used for destination events or upscale retreats. ⸻ 📍 Why Stay Inside the Walls? • Walkable Access: Everything is nearby—restaurants, museums, shops, and bars. • Historic Charm: Cobblestone streets, vibrant facades, and preserved Spanish colonial architecture. • Safety: The Walled City is well-patrolled and considered safe for tourists, even at night. • Nightlife & Culture: Live music, rooftop bars, and open plazas buzzing with life. ✅ Tips for Booking on Airbnb • Check the location: Listings sometimes say “Centro Histórico” but are just outside the walls—use the map feature to verify. • Look for air conditioning: Cartagena is hot and humid year-round. • Read reviews: Prioritize listings with many recent, positive reviews. • Watch for noise: Some parts of the Walled City (like near Plaza Santo Domingo) are lively well into the night

FAQs

Question

Is it safe to travel to Colombia?

Answer

Cartagena, Colombia, is generally considered one of the safer cities in Colombia, especially in the main tourist areas like the historic walled city (Ciudad Amurallada), Bocagrande, and Getsemaní. These neighborhoods are well-patrolled by police and have many tourists, so the risk of serious crime is relatively low. However, like many popular tourist destinations, Cartagena still has areas where crime can be an issue, particularly petty crimes such as pickpocketing, bag snatching, and scams. It’s always wise to take standard travel precautions: Avoid flashing valuables or large amounts of cash. Stay in well-lit, busy areas at night. Use authorized taxis or ride-hailing apps. Be cautious with your belongings, especially in crowded places. Some parts of Cartagena outside the main tourist zones can be less safe, so it’s best to get local advice or stick to known safe areas. Overall, with common-sense precautions, most visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience in Cartagena.
