Things To Do

We're so excited to share a few special places of interest in "Fayahope." Notable for its artistic verve, Fairhope is unique because it was founded as a Utopian community in 1896 by socialists from the North who believed in the economic gospel of Henry George: that there should be but one tax, a tax on the land. The Fairhope Single Tax colony is still extant; it's goal, to function as a bulwark against land speculation - on Colony land. No doubt, you will feel some of the utopian vibes oozing onto the streets as you take in the copious flowers & golf-cart families. These recommendations are in order from top cultural landmarks to a few choice restaurants and bars. Childrens' interests at bottom! *First Friday Art Walk will be downtown on October 4th, 2024. Basically, a gallery night.

Fairhope Municipal Pier

Fairhope Municipal Pier, Fairhope, AL

Less than a mile from downtown, Fairhope's "Town Square," renowned for its sunsets, breezes, people watching, feathered friends, and fishing well into the night. Perfect for a saunter to digest or take in some fresh air and physical exercise, this .25 mile wharf is the new home of one of Lizzie's mom's favorite restaurants - The Blind Tiger - which caters to the Parrothead boating contingent. (Lizzies favorite is the Royal Reds!!)

Eastern Shore Art Center

401 Oak Avenue, Fairhope, AL 36532

Epicenter of the very unique Fairhope Art Walk on Friday, October 4th from 5-9pm, they will most likely serve hors d'oeuvres and wine to the public. Bring your hankie and lightweight shirt because this mid-century modern gallery can get a bit steamy: what with all of Fairhope's high society piling in to gawk at the art on the walls during this monthly soiree. Although Fairhope has been dubbed "A drinking town with a flower problem," a word of caution here: although folks drink wine openly on the streets during First Friday Art Walk, it is still technically illegal to do so.

Fairhope Museum of History

24 North Section Street, Fairhope, AL 36532

Located directly opposite the Hampton Inn downtown, Josh spent a few hours here one night when taken into custody after his friends' high school graduation party got busted. Although the metal bars never clanked behind him, Fairhope's original City Hall has the old jail cells intact, replete with original graffiti curated by convicts of yesteryear. Perhaps you might pause to reflect on the simpler times, when they washed cars for the police and were allowed to walk down the street to the grocery. Highlights include the quirky socialist aspects of Fairhope's utopian genesis as well as local art, pottery, and a 3D exhibit of 100-year-old photographs.

Kiln Studio & Gallery

9 North Church Street, Fairhope, AL 36532

For those who want to see what the local pottery scene looks like...

Orange Street Pier-Beach

AL 36532

A quiet public-access pier with stunning views of Mobile Bay: just a couple miles from downtown, Orange Street Pier has hosted a number of dreamers seeking repose and camaraderie throughout the years. Parking on-site off of S. Mobile St. @ Orange Street west of Fairhope's Fruit & Nut District.

Refuge Coffee

4 South Bancroft Street, Fairhope, AL 36532

While the espresso machine here is the stuff of legends, this place is NOT open Sundays because these cats practice Shabbat - Xian style!!

Panini Pete's

42 South Section Street, Fairhope, AL 36532

A popular spot for lunching guests in the heart of downtown Fairhope, with al fresco seating in a French Quarter-style courtyard setting. Fresh mozzarella made in house. Also... beignets with powdered sugar & lemon wedges!?

Original Ben's Jr.

552 North Section Street, Fairhope, AL 36532

Nothing special about this place, so long as your standard is what Bar-b-que used to be in the 1970's Deep South! For some of us natives, its triumphant re-opening this year under new ownership (after several years of dereliction) was a call to spiritual renewal. However, please be warned about the rabid "base" who patronize Ben's. This is where working class angst goes to dine. They aren't shy with their judgmental stares...! (P.S.: yes, it's normal to feel intoxicated after eating their bacon cheeseburger. We used to swear they put something in it.)

Nini Squares

451 Magnolia Avenue, Fairhope, AL 36532

Support our local friends, the Cullens! They cut their pizza pies Sicilian-style.

Master Joe's LLC

21 North Section Street, Fairhope, AL 36532

Sushi beside the Hampton Inn & Suites - scrumptious!

Sage Lebanese Cuisine & Cafè

319 Fairhope Avenue, Fairhope, AL 36532

Never had a bad meal here! Top marks and a sweet family.

The Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa, Autograph Collection

One Grand Boulevard, Point Clear, AL 36564

If you're bored, you can go wander around this historic site if you tell the front guardsman you're headed to the Birdcage* - they'll know what you mean! *So called "Bucky's Birdcage Lounge" for the hotel's greeter of many decades, who, it was said, could remember the name, face, and city of every guest who graced the hotels haunted grounds during his tenure.

Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge - Pine Beach Trail

12295 Alabama 180, Gulf Shores, AL 36542

This 3-mile wilderness trail is our favorite chance to spend time communing with Mother Nature; home to the sacred sand oak grove where Lizzie accepted Josh's proposal of marriage <3

Beautiful White Sand Beaches at Gulf Shores, AL

Gulf Shores, AL 36542

This is where we run out of land heading south and east of Fairhope for about an hour. Visitors are often shocked that the Emerald Coast of Florida continues into coastal Alabama, but the murky brackish water of "America's Amazon" deposits so much silt into Mobile Bay that it does not allow for the same crystalline blue waters one sees to the East. It's kicks for fresh seafood, too. (Bimini Bob's)

McSharry's Irish Pub

101 North Bancroft Street, Fairhope, AL 36532

Traditional Irish pub whose namesake can be a bit dodgy - nevertheless, a staple of Fairhope community with a live Celtic band every Sunday at 6pm, for those who choose to stay.

Tongue & Groove Drinkery

77 South Section Street, Fairhope, AL 36532

For those of you who adore the high-powered kind of New South buffoonery, this place has very nice cocktails, or so they say...with booths and an outside patio.

The Book Cellar

336 De La Mare Avenue, Fairhope, AL 36532

Occasionally this bar has live music (however, neither of us have ever darkened its doors). Two Titfords worked in the venerable old book & arts shop adjacent before its intellectual dilapidation.

Fairhoper's Community Park

105 South Church Street, Fairhope, AL 36532

For our guests with kids, this park has wide open space for ball playing, pavilions, various swing sets and climbing apparatuses, etc.

Punta Clara Kitchen

17111 Scenic Highway 98, Fairhope, AL 36532

A bit of a jaunt down Scenic 98, this old kitchen makes all of its candies by hand. They are not shy about using margarine! Delectable and memorable for the kids, as there's a very antique vibe to the candy shop and...antique store in the hallway.

Mr Gene's Beans

302 De La Mare Avenue, Fairhope, AL 36532

The Fairhope Float will get your rite!!! Also, lots of treats & ice cream for the kiddos.

For all the days along the way
