What to Expect

The Wedding Website of Lily Brown and Felipe Segato Dezem
There will be no wedding type ceremony and no white dress (Lily is more partial to black). This is an anniverary party (we are calling it an elopement confirmation). We would love to have you, but please don't feel pressured - we know that Greece is far. Please come if the thought of attending brings you joy and not stress! Please see below for the events - the details are still being worked out. FYI - Lily and Felipe will be in Matala starting on Wednesday (10/01) and will leave on Monday (10/06). Felipe and Lily traveled to Matala on Crete with a group of lovely friends in September of 2024. Matala is a gorgeous hippie beach town - there are hippie Roman cave tombs (google: Caves Matala)! The ocean is warm and crystal clear - there is cliff jumping. The food is great and so are the cocktails. There is plenty going on, but it is not a party town. It is family friendly though we didn't see that many children - the tourists are largely 50+. It's perfect!

Travel & Hotels

There are multiple ways to get to Crete. We have experience with 2 Crete airports (Heraklion and Chania) and there are at least 2 ports for ferries (Heraklion and Chania). To get to Crete we took a ferry Santorini -> Heraklion port (Seajets). To leave Crete, our party flew out of Heraklion and Chania airports. No complaints. We rented a car in Heraklion from Hertz and drove to Matala (~1 hour drive). Most of the drive is easy country driving. There is also a bus (Heraklion Central Bus Station to Matala Beach ~$10) and taxis (~$80). Matala is closer to Heraklion. Rent a car if you want to explore Crete. Make sure you are renting an automatic car and not a manual if you cannot drive stick - maybe call and make sure you reserved an automatic since I swear I did, but they claim I did not (it worked out in the end). Matala has small hotels and AirBnBs. You can get a decent room for $50/night. We are not getting a hotel block. Definitely recommend staying walking distance to the beach.

Travel Note

Crete Bus Website

This is the source of truth for bus schedules (apparently they are subject to change)

Travel Note

Seajets (Greek Island Ferry)

Seajets isn't the only ferry company, but it is the one that we took. Recommendation to buy direct no matter which service you use.

Hotel

Hotel Sunshine Matala

We stayed in the 2 Bedroom suites. Mom and pop hotel with parking and kitchenettes. We liked it alot. Prime location and lovely woman who ran it - you could stay here.

Hotel

Matala Bay Hotel

This place looks good.
