How We Met

Online dating turns into whirlwind romance

We met online in a WhatsApp group created for the children of people from our village in Nigeria to connect with each other. The group was created in 2017, but we did not meet until October 2023 when Oshioke put out a call for help with a spelling bee competition he was trying to plan for local schools. My brother and I had just started the DJUI Memorial Foundation and Library that July, so I got in touch to see if we could co-sponsor or co-host the event. We didn't end up meeting or getting the spelling bee off the ground that December. I left Nigeria, but we stayed in touch. When I returned in October 2024, we immediately reconnected and met up in the village. We planned and hosted a read-a-thon event at the Library last December, and decided to start planning our life together -- including our wedding!

Travel

There are currently no nonstop flights from the U.S. to Abuja. You can either fly through an airline like Lufthansa, United Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and British Airways which will take you through Europe and then to Abuja. Or, you can take a direct flight to Lagos through Delta (or United, depending on where you are) and then book a local flight from Lagos to Abuja through AirPeace or Green Africa Airways. I have only been to the Abuja airport once, but I usually exchange dollars for naira at the Lagos airport, I assume you can do the same at the Abuja airport. I would advise doing so to make transactions easier. 1 USD is currently about N1500, but this is subject to change. I have also travelled from Lagos to Abuja via road (which could be an option for the fearless out there). There is Uber in Abuja and it costs about N15,000 (which is about $10) to get from the Airport to more central locations. A cheaper option is Bolt which you can download at the airport.

Travel Note

Where to stay

The airport is located in the outskirts of the city, so we would advise finding a hotel close to the city center where the Ministry of the Interior is located. We would like to reserve a block of hotel rooms for your convenience by the end of the week. These rooms would need to be booked by December 1st. Please check out the hotel options and let us know which accommodations you might prefer. We will add additional hotel options when we finalize the reception venue. If you would like to search for yourself in the meantime, we stay in an area called Gwarinpa, so that's probably the furthest from the city center you will want to be. Also outside of the city center are Jahi and Jabi. Jabi is nice, with a large mall, a lake and plenty of hotel options. The city center should have other great hotel options in the central business district; Wuse and Wuse I; Maitama; and the court is in Durumi, close to Garki and Garki II.
