Thank goodness for BLM lands, the last truly common places in the country! Kate is going out to fill her cup - in more than one way - and you are welcome to come along. Once I find a good place I'll add a map. Stay tuned! Rules of foraging: 1) If you're not totally sure you know what it is and it's safe, don't eat it 2) Practice stewardship: take only 30% from each organism, and from only 30% of that species in the area 3) Fall is the time for seeds, fruits, possibly some late flowers, and roots 4) Pay attention to where the plant is growing. If it doesn't look like a place where you'd want to eat, then don't. Avoid roadsides and runoff area from fields. Those areas are highly polluted and yes, it's in the plants that grow there. Yuck. Useful tools: 1) Bags, jars, containers! 2) Shovel 3) Field guide - I'll have a few, and there are some helpful plant identification apps for your phone, too 4) Good shoes, comfy clothes, a good sun hat 5) WATER!!! Hydrate or die

A truly amazing experience to imagine how these ancient people lived. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and lots of water!
We should be in the area for the changing aspen leaves, making a hike at Lizard Head an experience so beautiful it hurts. Sunscreen and tons (I mean tons) of water are a must!
The Mancos Valley is historically a regional bread-basket, and they specialized in apples. Heirloom trees make awesome cider! There's a town at the bottom of the reservoir! True story! It was called Mcphee, it was a company town for a lumber company that they decided to flood in order to create the reservoir. Good swimming, boating, fishing, camping...it's a cool place, and right outside of town!
Hard at work on these... Talk soon.
