Our belaytionship story
Isaac and Jess met the way many couples meet... on Bumble. When Jess got sick of the dating apps and deleted her profile, Isaac was saavy enough to find her on Instagram and invited her to go climbing. A couple of top ropes at the gym later, and they were plotting outdoor adventures, including summiting the Grand Teton. Once their two old dogs, Grizzly and Teddy, became best friends, Jess and Isaac knew their connection was special. The couple has shared many, many adventures. They completed their goal of climbing the Grand Teton and even returned to climb Irene's Arete in Grand Teton National Park. They traveled to El Potrero Chico multiple times to climb and along the way, adopted their three rescue pups, Chika, Mamacita, and Señor Pickles. They paddled over 60 miles on the San Juan River, experiencing the beauty of the slot canyons with some of their best friends. The couple's favorite adventure destination is Red Rock Canyon in Nevada. Jess and Isaac love "5.Fun" multi-pitch trad climbing.

Jannalee and Jess have been friends for over 30 years. They met in kindergarten when Jess asked if Jannalee wanted to play pretend (Tiny Toons to be exact). Jannalee is the closest thing Jess has to a sister and has always felt like family. Jannalee and Jess have lived together in Iowa City with Teddy, made art together, made ridiculous home movies, played a lot of Chrono Trigger, and had the most iconic Halloween couple's costume of all time: Jan and Wayne Skylar from Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job!. Jannalee and Jess have also shared a deep affinity for nature. Whether its swimming in Lake Michigan at night, or paddling on the San Juan, they both love the outdoors and spirituality. Jannalee was the first person in Jess' family to meet Isaac, and the two immediately loved each other. We are so honored to have Jannalee officiate our ceremony!

Virginia (Ginny) and Jess met in middle school when Jess geeked out that Ginny had a Dance Dance Revolution tee shirt on. Ginny and Jess remained close friends throughout high school, sharing many a sleepover where they laughed too loud. Ginny gave Jess the surprise of a lifetime when Jess came into her Women and Gender Studies class in college, and Ginny was already in the class after transferring to GVSU! Ginny and Jess have traveled the world together, visiting Paris, Munich, and Amsterdam on a whirlwind trip. They have also enjoyed sharing hikes, birdwatching, and plenty of lake days. Ginny is Jess' favorite karaoke partner, and they have an EPIC version of Bohemian Rhapsody. Thank you, Ginny, for helping us make out wedding so special!
Leah Burke

Leah and Jess met at GVSU where they both were studying art. As many best friendships start, the two did NOT like each other. But after they shared a late night in the Calder Art Studios, bonding over the stresses and dramas of their early twenties (and maybe a couple of cigarettes), they realized they had many deep connections. Leah and Jess affectionately started calling each other "Heather" after being obsessed with Manila Luzon and Raja Gemini from RuPaul's Drag Race, as well as the cult classic Heathers. Leah and Jess share a passion for the arts and have created many artworks, as well as visited numerous galleries and art museums across the country. The two have a very similar sense of humor, and share an innumerable amount of inside jokes. Leah and Jess have visited bustling and exciting cities like New Orleans, Boston, Chicago and, of course, New York. Leah and Jess share a love for seafood, delicious wine, and maybe the occasional "backswamp" drink (enjoy at your own risk!). Jess is thrilled to have Leah as a bridesmaid!

When Jess first started climbing, she was TERRIFIED. When she asked her professor how to get over the fear, he told her to find someone in the class she could trust. She looked over at Angie, and that was the beginning of their belaytionship. Angie and Jess have explored all over Utah together. They have hiked Angel's Landing in Zion National Park, Climbed multi-pitch adventures in Maple Canyon, and rappelled into the Goblin's Lair at Goblin Valley. Angie and Jess also challenge and support each other in races and competitions. Together, with their team, they won the bronze medal at Ragnar in 2021. They have competed in Climbing Up For Air, and Running Up for Air together. Angie is always Jess' biggest cheerleader, and has supported her in running her first 30k as her pacer. What is really special about Jess and Angie's relationship is the fact that even when things get hard (they lose their way on a descent, their boat gets stuck in the sand, a mountain lion is outside their tent) they work together to fix the problem, and are back to laughing and joking with each other. Jess is so excited to share her special day with Angie! TOOOOOOOOTSIE!!!!

When Jess moved in with Isaac in 2021, she was seeking community in her new hometown of Salt Lake City. She posted on Facebook in a women's climbing group that she was seeking a top rope endurance partner. This was the best Facebook post she has ever made. On the first day at the gym, Christie and Jess discussed what they needed in a climbing partner, and at the end, both got their calendars out to schedule their next "belay-bae" date (calendars are their love language)! Christie and Jess have grown together as friends and climbers. Jess taught Christie how to safely climb outdoors, clean anchors, and give a solid and soft lead catch. Christie taught Jess how to be a better instructor, the best ways to teach climbing skills, and how to be a better friend. Christie and Jess have a huge passion for helping others, and this shows in the community events they both have supported, such as the Ladies Climbing Coalition and Flash Foxy. They have also shared many climbing adventures across the country. Jess is thrilled to share her special day with Christie as one of her bridesmaids!
