The Bear & Dolphin: A Love Story

Written by our dear friend, Allison Rosenberg

Once upon a time, in the heart of the nation’s capital, lived a bear and a dolphin, unbeknownst to each other and mostly, if not entirely, happy. The bear liked salmon berries, lightly fried fish, and making everyone laugh. The dolphin liked hanging out with her pod, swimming to faraway places, and brunch. One day, their mutual friend, a fox, invited them both to a group dinner. The bear had just emerged from hibernation and was quite hungry, so accepted the invitation immediately. The dolphin briefly considered her schedule and how much she loved meeting new friends, and promptly accepted. Across the table from each other at dinner, the bear and the dolphin greeted each other over a berry martinis. “Nice to meet you,” said the dolphin. “The paw-sure is all mine,” said the bear. The dolphin laughed so hard that water started coming out of her blowhole. “What a cute bear,” thought the dolphin. “What a cute dolphin,” thought the bear. “I should find out if he has a girlfriend,” thought the dolphin. “Too bad I have a girlfriend,” thought the bear. Time went on without the bear and the dolphin crossing paths again. Summer turned to fall and the bear went into another hibernation season, emerging to find his girlfriend, an owl, had flown off with a lynx. Meanwhile, the dolphin had made plans to go on a long trip to Brazil. One day, the bear and the dolphin happened to find themselves at the same party. The recently single bear seized his chance and asked the dolphin to go dancing. “I love dancing,” thought the dolphin, and accepted. They had a great time. “I like him,” thought the dolphin. “Too bad I’m going to Brazil, and this can’t work.” The bear, meanwhile, was smitten, and a few days later, invited the dolphin to get fish tacos. They got tacos and laughed the whole time. “I like him a lot,” thought the dolphin. “Too bad I’m going to Brazil, and this can’t work.” The bear, on the other hand, had only grown more enamored, and shortly after, invited the dolphin to a fancy dinner, where they feasted on tuna crudo and grilled oysters. “I really like him,” thought the dolphin. “I’m going to Brazil,” she blurted. “This can’t work.” The bear grew quiet. The dolphin felt a pang of sadness, but was convinced that what she had done made sense. A few months later, the dolphin swam out for Brazil. She thought of the bear on occasion, like when someone would eat berries or make a joke, but reminded herself of her logic and refocused on her caipirinhas. Meanwhile, the bear thought often of the dolphin and her smooth dance moves. He knew that she had not gone out of his life for good - at least, not if he could help it. Time passed and another winter approached. The dolphin made a trip to DC from Brazil for the holidays, and, through the help of some conspicuously disappearing friends, found herself alone at dinner with the bear. The bear was nervous and tried to mask it with more jokes than usual. “What do you call the weather when bears are falling from the sky? Grizzling!” The dolphin laughed politely and cleared her throat. “Let’s talk. Let’s tell each other one thing the other person doesn’t know about you. I’ll go first.” She took a deep breath. “I don’t know how to balance my love for adventure with my desire to be home with a community, and if I come back I’m worried you’ll find me boring.” “Ah, but I love both boars and rings,” said the bear. “I may seem funny, but on the inside, I struggle with how people expect me to be both ferocious AND cuddly.” The dolphin blushed in relief and admiration. “I know that I’m going back to Brazil,” the dolphin said, “but I’d really like to give this a try.” “Yes!! Yee-claw!!” whooped the bear. And so they did. The dolphin went back to Brazil for a few months, and when she got back, she and the bear gave it a go, including continuing to conduct periodic structured relationship exercises. Five years later, they’re still at it.

Wedding Party

Meet our loved ones who will have first-row tickets to the conjunction of our lives.

Eliot Feenstra

Officiant

Eliot is Emily's older brother and they have been playing duets together on the piano for roughly 28 years. When they were young, they were deep playmates and adversaries! Eliot was known to paint Emily, give haircuts, and even hide her behind the couch. Despite Eliot's senior status, they agree that Emily may have an older soul and certainly a little more patience with life's lessons. They have grown closer as they've grown up despite living far apart. They both enjoy adventures, trip planning, games, bicycling, tricky puzzles, math, strategic thinking, singing, and good food. Eliot is honored to be officiating Emily and James' wedding ceremony!

Eristeo Perez

Best Man

James and Eristeo are an "opposites attract" situation. While he's like a golden retriever—loyal and adventurous—Eristeo is more of a cat, enjoying his own space and routine. Eristeo prefers walking everywhere, to the beat of his own drum. He craves routine more than sugar or caffeine and is a spreadsheet nerd with an obsession for measurement on a professional, practical, and philosophical level. Eristeo struggles to make and maintain close friends because he's autistic. As a result, he's grateful to have someone as accommodating and thoughtful as James in his life. They first met at Austin College as political rivals but soon became best friends. Since being college roommates, they've shared a lot of hookahs, condoms, bidets, tears, and turkey. Eristeo considers James to be his brother.

Kimby Josephson

Maid of Honor

Kimby met Emily their first day of freshman orientation at Carnegie Mellon. Five years later they were taking 27 hour bus rides and trekking through the snow together in Patagonia. Ten years later they were exchanging voice memos between Michigan (Kimby) and Brazil (Emily) about this goofball James who was starting to become a more serious fixture in her life. Fifteen years later you can find Kimby sobbing silent tears of joy at Emily’s side at the altar. An hour or so after that you’ll find her scream-singing to Whitney Houston or Beyoncé on the dance floor.

Cristian Perez

Little Brother

Cristian can’t remember when he met James, but at this point it’s just all a blur and James appeared in his life as the new kid on the block. Just like his other friends, James was older than Cristian by about two years. Truthfully, Cristian didn’t expect to make a long lasting friendship with him since we were so different. Cristian was a cry baby, hadn’t hit puberty yet and was timid. James on the other hand was the opposite. They eventually developed a close friendship where Cristian saw him as a family member. James used to pick on him, take care of him, look out for him, give him advice and check up on him. In difficult moments of Cristian's life, James has been there as a person he could have open and honest communication with. James has had a long lasting impact on Cristian's development and growth and he will forever be grateful for that. The distance can’t keep us apart. "I love you man, what? ...Goodnight."

Cameron Feenstra

Bridesman (Not So Little Brother)

Cam is Emily's younger brother. He was more or less her 4th birthday present as he was born just one day earlier. He lives in California but he always looks forward to getting together with Emily and James and playing board games or getting outside. Cam is so excited to be part of this wedding and to watch them both grow together.

Philip Benavides

Broseidon, Lord of the Brocean

Philip is James' cousin. They grew up spending time each summer together at their aunt's house in South Texas, where most of the cousins would converge. Now, Philip resides in Nashville with his wife, Kaitlyn, and their daughter, Ava June. The family loves outdoor activities such as cycling, hiking, and planning their next adventure.

Heather Fisher

Bridesmaid

Heather is one of Emily's cousins, although they like to remember they are genetically as close as half siblings - due to identical twin dads. (Heather is also a genetic counselor ;-)) After Heather spent a summer in Pittsburgh during college, Heather and Emily have stayed in close touch through many transitions in their lives - schools, jobs, homes, travels, boyfriends, and weddings! They've never lived in the same place since that Pittsburgh summer, but phone catch-ups, video messages, and visits have kept their hearts close. Heather is so excited to be supporting Emily in the upcoming celebrations!

Adani Sanchez

First College Friend. Sister from Another Mister.

Once upon a time a friendly Austin College freshman asked a visibly upset Mexican woman and her daughter if he could help them bring a mini fridge to the 4th floor of Dean Hall. That one interaction really snow balled and now James can’t get rid of this annoying person — Adani. Now they regularly face time, send unhinged memes, and get together most Thanksgivings. Who knew that dropping out of pre-med together could be such a unifying force. Beyond school, they maintained their friendship through adventures like moving James to DC and meeting in Chicago. Adani and her partner Eristeo live in Illinois now where James has quickly made friends with their friends and all of Adani’s coworkers during his visits. So let this be a warning to you that no good deed goes unpunished.

Juliana Cavalcante

Bridesmaid

Ems was one of the best gifts of Juliana's stay in the United States. This Brazil-US connection has lasted for years, and no matter the distance, they are just a whatsapp call away. A few years ago, Ems and James came to Brazil for Juliana & Rafa's wedding and were part of some of the happiest days of their lives. Now, Juliana can't wait to celebrate another milestone of this union with the couple and wish it to be happy, full of love, and exactly how they want it to be. See you soon!

Frank McStay

James' Moral Compass

Frank has known James for nearly half his life, having met during freshman year at Austin College. Their friendship solidified during a friendly Cici's Pizza buffet faceoff in Sherman--RIP in pieces our stomachs. Their love for food and one another continued to grow when James moved to DC and they discovered "Wingers," also known as Kangaroo Boxing Club. From late gaming and extreme-ultimate ping pong, to all you can eat crablegs in Maryland (and shrimp shells), fun times and poor decisions were always had.

Allison Rosenberg

Bridesmaid

Allison met Emily in DC nine years ago, through Kimby (maid of honor!), when Emily became an honorary member of Kimby and Allison’s friend-group of coworkers. They became fast friends as neighbors in Columbia Heights, where Allison would bring her bowl of dinner across the street to eat at Emily’s house. Over time they have continued to bond over outdoor adventuring (including admiring oddly shaped rocks in Bryce Canyon, Utah), the quirks of the neighborhood food coop, and regular walks around Mt Pleasant. Allison now lives in Portland, Oregon, and is thrilled to help see Emily into this new phase of her life where she will make it official that James will be making her laugh like there is no tomorrow, forever.

Kyle Potaniec

Fellow Nicolas Cage Enthusiast

James and Kyle met through the Austin College admissions office, after both had graduated. At a boring job in a boring town, there was little to do so the constant shenanigans and bonding, in and outside of work, built a friendship quickly. After a year, both moved to the next chapter of their lives which would be in DC, with a one-year pitstop for Kyle in Italy. When they reconnected in DC, they picked up where they left off, now living a 15-minute walk from each other it was very easy. Through Nick Cage pranks, grilling out, 50 cent wings, karaoke on/in various vehicles, dungeons and dragons, video games, and all the various heartfelt parts of friendship, they continued living their best lives.

Bryan Botello

James' Fashion Icon

Bryan first noticed James at the annual "Mr. AC" competition. As he watched James flex his well-toned, oiled muscles in a skimpy—yet tasteful—speedo, Bryan knew they had to be friends. As the years passed a beautiful friendship blossomed. Bryan knew they had truly cemented their bond when he scored an elusive invite to the second annual DWAD-mas. James has always been a steadfast, caring, and loyal friend through their years together in Sherman, DC, and apart—whether they were smoking meats or smoking noobs. Bryan has always admired James' sincerity, thoughtfulness, and humor, and is honored to stand by his side and support him and Emily as they embark on this next stage of their lives. Bryan lives in Denver, CO with his wife, Emily, and their two pets, Maya and Abby.

Randy Tea

Legendary Gentleman

Randy and James’ friendship started with a simple invitation: “Hey Randy, want to join us at Whataburger?” Now, they share more than fries and burgers—they spend most evenings together. James often stays up to connect with friends online, while Randy always has a video, movie recommendation, or new multiplayer game ready for them to enjoy together. The most memorable event in their friendship occurred on Randy’s 24th birthday. Randy was in grad school in Tyler, Texas, just two hours from his friends. So, James, Sam, and Andrew planned a surprise visit to celebrate Randy’s birthday. The challenge was they had no way of tracking Randy’s real-time location. James came up with a risky idea: call Randy and talk about Pokémon, hoping to learn where he was. The conversation went like this: “Hey Randy, can I ask you about the latest Pokémon game?” “Um, not right now. I’m out celebrating my birthday.” This was James’ chance. “Oh, really? Where are you now?” “Where’s Rufus.” “Rufus? I’m asking where you are RIGHT NOW.” “Where’s Rufus. It’s the bar I’m at.” “The bar’s called ‘Where’s Rufus’? Am I hearing that right? Could you repeat it?” “Where’s Rufus. Why does it matter?” “Uh… no reason.” *click* James had accidentally revealed their plan. All jokes aside. If Randy had a nickel for every time he was in a car accident with James, he would have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it happened twice.

Samuel Baggett

Bonafide Polar Bear

James and Sam share many things: a love for frosty-cold root beer, dreams of a shared farmstead, and an appreciation of cold weather. They met in the most peculiar way, too: Freshman year at Austin College, James and Sam were separated by one floor and one wing of Dean Hall dormitory. Their first interactions included passing each other in the college cafeteria and Sam studying the back of James' head in Biology 101. Their friend groups eventually joined into the people you'll see at the wedding and at some point-in-time James recounted this tale to Sam: "Man, I remember passing you in the hallways and seeing you in Biology and I always thought to myself 'I sure would like to be that guy's friend'!" To which Sam replied "That's crazy because I would say the same things to myself too!" Well, here they are, over a decade later. You'll find them sipping Diet Barq's, cheering the fate that led them to one another.

Travel

Our venue is about 15 minutes outside of Fredrick, MD. We'd recommend that guests stay in Fredrick - which has a cute and walkable downtown area. Fredrick, MD is roughly equidistant from the three airports in the region -- IAD, BWI, and DCA. From the airport, we recommend renting a car to travel the 45 min to Fredrick. (James says "Drive safely, Maryland drivers are the worst")

She loves the feel of sleeping bags but not the idea of sleeping in them out in the wilderness.
"I am the night"
"If I fits; I sits"
In this photo I asked Delighla to pose like a tipped cow.

Also our cozy DC apartment is already pretty packed! But if you absolutely insist, here are a few ideas: - If you're married, a letter with marriage advice (tell us a story maybe you don't always share) - If you live in DC, maybe an IOU for a dinner or game night - your company is so valuable to us! - Anyway you can share a special skill with us - write us a poem, or song, or piece of art And if the above don't work for you, here are a few more ideas:
