On Aug 9, 2025, Hayden proposed between Porto Heli and Spetses. Eight years flashed through Lia's mind as Hayden got down on one knee, and our families surprised us, forming a heart with their boats.
Every spring, Delaware has that one event everyone talks about: Point to Point. It’s a horse race where everyone has an excuse to get dressed up, and this one happened to be the last before college started. This is where Lia was first introduced to Hayden, little did she know they would be going to the same college let alone living in the same dorm complex. Fast forward to move-in day. Lia walked into Gilbert Hall with her parents and sister just as Hayden was stepping out of the elevator. They made eye contact long enough for both sets of parents to ask, “Who is that?” Freshman year started out with casual hellos and hallway conversations, and somewhere in between, Hayden managed to get sick. Lia texted her mom asking what kind of tea she should make. That week was spent in the Gilbert Hall kitchen, making teas and hanging out until Hayden finally felt better. What a crazy way to spend Freshman Year! Lia’s family met Hayden for the first time. They loved him, but since this would be Lia’s first boyfriend, he still had some proving to do. Lia played hard to get, and Hayden… well, Hayden happily ran to get. After a few months of this, Hayden finally asked Lia out on a date. By the start of sophomore year, they were officially dating, it only took Hayden three tries to get that “yes.” Most weeknights were spent side by side in the library. Even on nights Hayden wasn’t there, he always made sure to drive Lia home, just to be sure she got home safely. Hayden years later admitted that sometimes those “late study nights” were really just an excuse to spend a little more time together. Then came 2020, the year of graduation and the start of long distance. Hayden got a job in Brooklyn, close enough for weekend drives but farther than what they were used to. Distance quickly became a theme over the years: a plane ride to Chicago, then Delaware to Miami, and even months apart while Hayden worked in Greece. They say distance makes the heart grow fonder, and that couldn’t have been more true. Every flight, every drive, and every late-night FaceTime was worth it. It wasn’t always easy, but it made them stronger and taught them something important: they wanted to be together, always. Now the distance is behind them, and the adventure is just getting started. It may have taken Hayden three tries to ask Lia to be his girlfriend, but it only took one to ask her to be his wife. Now Hayden has no choice but to travel everywhere with Lia for the rest of their lives, and she wouldn’t have it any other way.
