Things To Do

Fortezza of Rethymnon

Fortezza of Rethymnon

Rethimno, 741 31, Greece

Built by the Venetians in the 16th century to protect the city from pirate attacks, the Fortezza Castle is one of Rethymno’s most iconic landmarks. Wander through its ancient stone walls, bastions, and vaulted passages while taking in breathtaking panoramic views of the sea and Old Town. Tip: Visit at sunset for incredible photos!

Old Venetian Port of Chania

Old Venetian Port of Chania

8 Agiou Markou, Chania, 731 32, Greece

We highly recommend spending time at the Old Venetian Harbor in Chania! It’s one of Crete’s most iconic spots! Stroll along the cobblestone streets lined with cafés, shops, and colorful Venetian architecture, explore the lighthouse for incredible views, and enjoy fresh seafood right by the water. For history lovers, visit the Maritime Museum of Crete or the Archaeological Museum nearby. And if you have extra time, take a short drive to Seitan Limania Beach, one of the most stunning beaches in Crete with turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs.

Elafonissi Beach

730 01, Greece

Elafonisi is a protected nature reserve on Crete's southwestern coast, known for its unique pink sand and shallow lagoon, accessible from Kissamos, which is a municipality in the Chania regional unit of Crete. It is a popular tourist destination for its exotic beauty and is often referred to as the "Caribbean of Crete".

Spinalonga

Spinalonga

Greece

One experience we highly recommend is visiting Spinalonga Island, also known as the Leper Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site with rich history and stunning views. Take a boat excursion from Plaka, a charming coastal village about 2.5 hours from Rethymno. Boat tours are easy to book in person upon arrival. For an unforgettable drive, take the scenic route through Fourní, where Uncle Connie’s family is from, passing aromatic herb fields and charming backroad villages. On the way, stop for lunch: • To Paradosiako (Sissi) – Family-owned seafood taverna with fresh catches and sea views. • Taverna Kalyva (Malia) – Beachside gem on Potamos Beach with incredible Greek dishes, local wines, and recipes from the owner’s mother. Continue to Plaka and enjoy the short boat ride for an unforgettable day. Grab a classic iced Freddo Cappuccino or Frappe back in Plaka or in Elounda after for great seaside view!

To Steki Tou Nikola

To Steki Tou Nikola

143 Eleftheriou Venizelou, Malia, 700 07, Greece

Since 2011, this has been one of our absolute favorite spots in Crete, and it’s hands down where you’ll find some of the best gyros in all of Greece (in our opinion!). Perfect for a quick bite on the go or a relaxed lunch, this cozy, family-owned taverna is a must visit. Fotoula’s recommendation: Get the pork gyro with everything and yogurt. Thank us later! The restaurant is run by one of the sweetest families, a hardworking husband and wife duo who started this place for their family. Their warm hospitality, incredible flavors, and dedication make this a true hidden gem.
