How We Got Here

Martha was interning at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., in the summer of 2019 when she was tasked with driving attendance to a new rooftop happy hour series. Luckily, Gabe was working on the Hill and lived in the same building as one of Martha’s colleagues, who set up the perfect meet-cute overlooking the Potomac. They never exchanged phone numbers, but they reconnected on a dating app a few days later. Over a hot summer, they bonded over debating presidential primary candidates and their shared love of movies and art, before leaving for the next chapters of their schooling, miles apart. Long weekend phone calls and a visit to Chapel Hill in 2020 convinced them there was a connection worth pursuing, but growing concern over an unknown virus changed everyone’s plans. Martha graduated from college on Zoom, then promptly flew to Colorado to meet Gabe’s family for two weeks. Two weeks turned into a month, and a month turned into a month and a half. Their relationship grew deeper over games of Catan, mountain hikes, and family gatherings. Martha loved Denver so much that she moved there a few months later, job in hand. Gabe graduated in the spring of 2021 with his eyes set on seeing the world. A chance encounter with one of Martha’s classmates at her college bar turned into the opportunity of a lifetime in Copenhagen, so the couple spent some time on their own paths: Gabe in Denmark and then Mumbai, and Martha in Denver, with her ambitions set on a new city. In the summer of 2023, the couple reunited, each with their own future already planned. Gabe was set to earn his master’s in London, while Martha was making the move to New York City. But after all that time apart, they realized their hearts had never left each other. So what’s an ocean between them? For two years, the two traveled back and forth between New York and London. Gabe got to enjoy summers in Central Park, and Martha shopped at Liberty London every Christmas. Then Gabe graduated and moved into Martha’s shoebox Upper East Side apartment. For the first time, they lived in the same city, with no end date. New restaurants, live music, cozy friendships, and long days in the park became the backdrop for the life they had always wanted. It just took a little time to get there. During one of the most historic summers in the Big Apple, fresh off a Knicks championship, Gabe got down on one knee on a rooftop (where all good stories begin) overlooking Manhattan, while a shocked Martha stood there in her Karl-Anthony Towns jersey. She said yes, and now, finally, they’re getting married. They are overwhelmingly happy that you will be there with them in September to celebrate the next chapter of their story.
