Evan and Cayley met on the dance floor just before midnight on New Years Eve. It was at the Buck n' Ball rodeo and dance in Gillette, Wyoming with Chancey Williams playing when Evan first asked Cayley to dance. Dancing together was easy and fun, and before they knew it, the song was done. A few songs later, Evan asked Cayley to dance again. The song was called "Kiss Me" and it was the last song before the midnight countdown... They didn't kiss at the count of zero, but they both thought about it and it sure felt romantic anyway! Even so, they danced the rest of the night away and, for the next six months, kept finding dances and concerts to meet up at and adventures to go on together. Their relationship wasn't too serious at that time because both knew that at the end of summer they would be moving separate directions for school and work. As Evan put it, they were just taking it "one two step at a time" and enjoying the little time they had together while it lasted.
At the end of the summer, Cayley moved to Missouri for graduate school and Evan moved further west into Wyoming for a new work position. When they said goodbye in July, neither knew for sure if they would see each other again. One month later, Evan travelled to Missouri to see Cayley... and then he did it again the next month! Soon, they were taking turns driving, flying, and driving some more every few weeks. They booked the cheapest flights in the dead of night carrying nothing but a small backpack for the next two years. Whenever there was a last-minute round-trip flight deal, they jumped at it. It didn't matter the weather, they went through it to be together.
When they were together, time went by too fast. When they were apart, time dragged on. The almost two years of long distance went by achingly slow, yet it was over before they knew it. The summer after graduation, after many months of searching, both found jobs in the town they first met - Gillette, Wyoming. Neither had been in a relationship this long before and, despite the inconvenience of it all, it had somehow seemed the easy decision to choose each other. Then, at the end of June, they took a trip to go camping in Glacier National Park. It was here where Evan took the chance to propose to Cayley - alone at "Paradise Point" on the beach of a perfectly peaceful lake at sunset. Like their relationship as a whole, it turned out far better than either expected or could have planned.
