Question

Bulgarian Wedding Traditions

Answer

Welcoming of the Newlyweds The newlyweds step onto a white cloth, symbolizing the bright and peaceful life they hope to share together. According to Bulgarian tradition, they are welcomed by the groom’s mother, or sometimes the bride’s mother, as a sign of accepting the new family. The ritual includes bread, salt, and honey. The couple first receives bread with salt, representing the bitter and difficult moments of married life, followed by honey to symbolize sweetness and happiness in their future together. Traditionally, the groom receives the first salty bite because he is expected to face life’s hardships first. The best man and maid of honor also receive honey for a sweet life. A toast follows, and the champagne glasses must be emptied completely to avoid tears in the marriage. The host asks how the wine tastes, and the best man replies, “Bitter!” (Gorchivo!), encouraging the couple’s first wedding kiss. Kicking Copper Pot A copper pot filled with a little water and two flowers symbolizes the future family life of the couple, wishing it to flow smoothly “like water.” The flowers represent a boy and a girl. When the pot is kicked, the flower that comes out first predicts the gender of the couple’s first child: white for a boy and red for a girl. Breaking Bread The newlyweds break a loaf of bread above their heads, symbolizing growth and striving for a better future. Whoever receives the larger piece is believed to have the leading role in the household. If the bride gets the larger piece, she will lead the home; if the groom does, he will provide for the family financially. Standing back to back, the couple holds the bread while the best man or maid of honor gives the signal to break it. Best Man’s Speech & Horo The best man congratulates the guests and the newlyweds in a traditional speech. In Bulgarian custom, the celebration cannot truly begin until the best man has spoken. His speech concludes with the traditional “Kumovo horo,” a ceremonial folk dance.

Question

Tradiciones de boda búlgaras
