Her Story

The Wedding Website of Dr. Athena Sagadevan and Dr. Tom Byvank
Many of you already know Athena from childhood, but here’s a quick recap of her journey. Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Athena is the middle child, with an older brother, Allan, and a younger sister, Addelynn. She attended Assunta Girls' School before studying pre-engineering at Sunway College through the American Degree Transfer Program. Athena then moved to the U.S. to pursue her undergraduate and Master's degrees in Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences at the University of Michigan. She later earned a PhD in Nuclear Engineering from Texas A&M University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Today, Athena works as a Research and Development Engineer at Los Alamos National Laboratory focusing on non-destructive assay technologies for radiation detection. Athena loves travelling, trying new restaurants, dancing and spending time with loved ones.

His Story

Tom was born in Ohio, USA, as the only child of Bette Feist and Frans Byvank. From a young age, he was always eager to try new foods, create art, and ask the questions "why?" and "how?". His curiosity extended to the world of science, and this passion led him to pursue an undergraduate degree with a double major in Physics and Astronomy at The Ohio State University Honors Program, where he graduated with Honors Research Distinction in Physics. Tom continued his studies with a Master's degree and PhD in Applied and Engineering Physics at Cornell University, honing his expertise in Plasma Physics. He then joined Los Alamos Laboratory, where he continues to work today as a scientist involved in both experimental and computational plasma physics, focusing on high energy density physics. Tom loves trying new foods, drawing, painting, boxing, hiking, playing board games, and spending time with friends and family.

Our Story

The Wedding Website of Dr. Athena Sagadevan and Dr. Tom Byvank
We are thrilled to invite you to celebrate our love story ... a story that began in the heart of Los Alamos, New Mexico. It was at the renowned Los Alamos National Laboratory, where we both shared a deep passion for nuclear physics, and our paths first crossed. While our careers brought us together, it was our shared love for food, board games, and exploring new places that truly nurtured our bond. Our connection grew stronger with each new adventure, and before long, we realized we were building something truly special. We will be celebrating our wedding in August 2025 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, surrounded by family and friends. We’re now excited to share this special moment with all of you in Malaysia as well. Please visit our website for all the details about our wedding and our journey together. We can’t wait to celebrate with you! With love, Dr. Athena & Dr. Tom
