Comedy is all about timing.... One late evening at a comedy theatre (which is the way all comedy theatre stories begin), Mike was hosting an Improv Jam at the Loft. As the first group of the evening filtered onto the stage, a stunning blond cut an imposing figure from the shadows of the audience as she sauntered to the bleached lights of the stage. Mike couldn't help but make eyes with her as they both smiled at each other and she said "I have no freaking idea how to do improv." Her name was Desirée. Mike and Desirée would share the stage again and again, and they'd carve out a space at Pioneers Bar next door and talk art and life and anything at all while the din of random music lulled in the background, for many nights. And in between the jests and the drink orders, they'd exchange a look that only they knew -- from the beginning -- meant that what was happening was only the first of multiple acts. While 2020 changed the world and forced us all to stay in touch online, Mike and Des would keep the convo going in DMs and virtual improv shows on Instagram Live...until at long last the moment came for people to hang out in person again. As they hung out in a group of friends once again Mike and Desirée could no longer deny those not-so-secret moments of eye contact; of giggles and winks. So they stopped denying it. Little did they know how incredible the next act was about to be.
(Mike): Okay, so we were in the Azores -- a group of islands near Portugal. A paradise. I had hidden the ring in a cargo pocket of some hiking pants, because I really wanted to spring the moment on her in some "perfect" moment with a gorgeous view. Little did I know I would LITERALLY get that opportunity...after we sweated our butts off hiking mostly uphill for almost 10 miles with a loose diamond ring rattling around in my pants. I set up a camera when we got to the top and told her we were going to record a travel vlog, before getting down on one knee on camera. I think she was pretty surprised. (Des): I was...he's SO satisfied with himself.
(Mike): I wouldn't say it was a date per say...but one day when there was shin-deep snow outside, we trekked on foot from Brooklyn to Manhattan over the Manhattan Bridge, giggling like children the entire way. It didn't matter how bad the footing was...it just mattered that we were together.
(Mike and Des): Hiking. Honestly, nothing even comes close.
(Mike): Des cooked a meal for us one night when we were in Portugal. It was traditional Azorean fare, and we ate it with a view of a gorgeous lake. Unforgettable. (Des): Anytime Mike assembles sandwiches for us... It is not debatable that I am the better chef, but Mike's nickname has become "The Sandwich Czar". I just can NOT get the ratio and preciseness he gets with a sandwich.
(Des and Mike): It may sound cliche, but being married and living in New York City is a pretty big life goal already met. Sooo....probably owning our own home someday. (Des): Oh -- and getting a dog. (Mike): Oh. Duh, yeah.
(Mike): How much we love decorating our home. (Des): We've named ALL of our plants after female singers and artists. Our latest adoption is Grace Jones.
(Mike): That I LOVE to clean and do the laundry. (Des): That I can drink him under the table. One time I gave him a piggy-back ride to the subway when he was too drunk!
