It all started in the fall of their Junior year at Ames High School. Jason and Courtney had been assigned seats across the room from each other in their English class. After stealing a few glances at Courtney from across the room, Jason decided to invite her to the homecoming dance that fall. The tradition at Ames High School was to find a creative way to invite someone to the dance. Jason had a plan. To ask Courtney to the dance, Jason left a toaster at her doorstep with a note that said: 'Pop me up" on the lever of the toaster. Courtney immediately pushed the lever down, and the toast popped up along with a plea from Jason: “Don’t toast my heart, will you go to homecoming with me?” Courtney said yes! Jason was lucky enough to get a second date with her, (since he only stepped on her feet once at the dance.) It wasn’t long before she fell for the goofy, fun-loving boy from her English class, who also promised to never toast her heart.
