March 2020 was a wild time. With the world on pause, people binge-watched shows, baking banana bread, and swiping on dating apps. Spencer and I were no different. Our millennial love story like may others, kicked off on Bumble. We had crossed paths before—same high school, mutual friends, and I even sang karaoke in Spencer's living room while he was bartending at Ascona's one night with his roommates. They say timing is everything. After matching on Bumble, we chatted about travel, music, family, and our mutual love for dogs. We tested the waters with a Zoom date complete with a silly presentation and a Cece LeMay quiz, which sealed the deal. Three hours flew by, and we felt the spark. Next we planned a picnic at Alvarado Park which was filled with easy, exciting conversation. After two dates, we both knew this was something special. The pandemic created a unique dating scene where we thrived. We got creative—card games, cookie baking challenges, fort building in my living room, and hiking with our sweet Lola. We cooked and talked more than anyone I know. This style of dating helped us connect deeply while focusing less on the reservations to fancy dinners. We both felt special that we could make each other feel so loved with such simple activities. Effort and creativity became our shared love language.
After five years of dating, countless conversations, and ring shopping, it was finally time for Spencer, Lola, and I to take the plunge into our next adventure— an engagement! It all started with a family move into a cozy new home in Walnut Creek. Despite the pouring rain on move in day, we were ready to embrace this new chapter and create a place we could truly call "home." As the days turned into weeks, our new spot began to feel warmer. Spencer kept nudging me about throwing a housewarming party, eager to have family over! Loving the idea of family gatherings and hosting, I instantly agreed, blissfully unaware that he was secretly orchestrating an engagement celebration filled with love, family, and friends. The party was set, the house was cleaned, and the Costco run was a success! Spencer had the brilliant idea to keep us busy by getting out of the house the morning of the party. He suggested a hike to our favorite spot, the Lafayette Reservoir, which should have tipped me off. We embarked on our 6.0-mile adventure with Lola, chatting and singing to music along the way. As we tackled the last big climb around mile 4, the chatter dwindled, and I sensed something brewing. Spencer grabbed Lola and sprinted up the hill. I fully expected to find him down on one knee as I turned the corner. To my surprise, he was just sitting on a bench, gazing out. I joined him, and soon he was pouring out heartfelt words about our life and future together. He got down on one knee! Saying "yes" was the easiest decision! After I screamed YES little, he made sure to ask Lola. Ashley emerged from the bushes ten minutes later, we snapped some celebratory photos, and we headed home to celebrate. What I thought was a family get-together turned out to be a surprise engagement party waiting for us back at home. It was a fantastic day, adding to the many wonderful days ahead!
