Our Love Story

2012 - present

We met at the Downtown Aquarium Denver in 2012 - Eric was the Quarantine Aquarist and in charge of caring for the classroom animal collection. Julie began as an intern in the education department there, and was later hired full-time as an educator. We became friends as Eric taught Julie everything her brain would hold about aquarium care, the Nitrogen cycle, and tropical fish. We bonded over a mutual love of Arrested Development, Roger from American Dad, and haunted houses. Apparently, many coworkers were secretly (or not-so-secretly) shipping us, but we were just friends, even when Eric moved to Georgia. Julie once visited Eric after he moved to Georgia; we went to Florida to swim with the manatees and explore the Gulf Coast of Florida and the Georgia Coast. We even met up in New Orleans, with Julie's friend Tamara, to explore. But, again, we stayed friends. However, Julie was convinced that the Georgia Coast was a good place to live, because she took a job there. She went to visit Eric on holidays, even though it was a 5 hour drive. But, again, we were still JUST friends. Eventually, Julie moved up to Atlanta near Eric, and that's when we really started to hang out a lot. People in Julie's life would tease her about Eric; people in Eric's life would tease him about Julie. Eventually, finally, after many hiking trips and horror movies, things fell into place No one was surprised that we fell in love, but there were a lot of "FINALLY"s when we went Facebook Official. While dating, we traveled to Oregon, Colombia, Ireland, North Carolina, and Tennesee. We love to explore nature and new places together, eat food, and veg out. Our relationship survived what felt like long-distance during COVID isolation - in part thanks to watching the entirety of the tv show Bones together in our separate homes. After a year of that, Eric moved in to Julie's house and we adopted Arlo (Sunny is technically Julie's dog, but loves Eric the most of anyone on Earth). Eric chose to propose very secretly - Julie was not sold on the institution of marriage for herself, and never dreamed about it the way a lot of people do. However, as soon as he proposed on that empty little beach in Skibbereen, Ireland, she was 100% on board - a testament to the unconditional love, dedication, and shared sense of adventure that Eric brings. Together, we bring out the best in each other and our future is built on an incredibly solid foundation of support and friendship.

Proposal

July 13, 2024 - Skibbereen, Ireland

Julie arranged a surprise trip to Ireland with Eric for a Christmas present, but Eric planned a surprise for her as well. There were many picturesque, beautiful locations in Ireland that we loved, but Eric wanted to propose on the beach. At sunset. With no one around. Unfortunately for Eric, they kept running into problems. First, Julie kept avoiding beaches for some unknown reason, even though she LOVES the ocean. Then the beaches were all crowded. Or it was the wrong time of day. Then we went to Skibbereen, after a long day of driving. It's a small town in southern Ireland, and to quote the nice crepes man in Dingle, "Why are you going there? It's so out of the way." But look it up - it was beautiful. Our lodging for the night was in a house on top of a hill looking over the Atlantic Ocean. It was beautiful. We changed into our swimsuits for a sunset swim (and it was summer in Ireland, so that was about 9:30 PM). However, the water was cold and fully of jellies. Julie complained about them, a lot, but Eric managed to convince her to keep exploring the beach area and look for tide pools. Finally, the beach cleared out as Julie was collecting rocks and still complaining about the jellies. Eric tried to get her to "take a selfie" in the waves, and "what if he's proposing?" crossed her mind briefly, immediately followed up by a hearty inner laugh - AS IF! Eric kicked his flipflops off, Julie went to go get them, but he told her not to worry about them and pulled her close to him. At this point, Julie was a little concerned that something was wrong, because he was looking at her so intently and said her name so seriously. Eric saw the dumbfounded deer-in-the-headlights look on her face, and proceeded to get down on one knee. At this point, Julie's ears started ringing and she froze as happiness filled up her heart. Eric's proposal included phrases such as, "We've survived terrible jobs together," "we've raised one beautiful dog, and one a-hole dog," and "will you do me the honor of being my wife?" And Julie was very excited to accept. We recreated the moment at the same beach the next morning, in nicer clothes, thanks to some kind Irish people willing to be impromptu photographers. So now you know how we got to this point in our lives, how in love we are, and how excited to spend our lives together we are.

Wedding Party

Eric Carlson

Groom

Often called "the devil child," Eric grew up to be...not so bad! He's currently taking each day at a time. Eric has always been fascinated by animals; he volunteered at Miller Park Zoo starting in grade school. It was also where he got his career as a zoologist/zookeeper/aquarist started! Despite his difficulties with sunlight, Eric enjoyed hiking big mountains in Colorado, swimming in Crater Lake in Oregon, hiking the Andes in Colombia, and exploring the rugged mountains of western Ireland. He is a burgeoning wildlife photographer (seriously, you should check out his Instagram!), and self-proclaimed nerd. If you ever want to have an engaging discussion with Eric, he knows a lot about cars (especially Jeeps), podcasts, mid-century modern design, and pop culture.

Pat Carlson

Mother of the Groom

Pat is a mother of three, and the grandmother of four. She enjoys going for hikes with her husband, James, and spending time with her dog, Rosie. When she visited Eric in Georgia, she showed up a day early - thus throwing off Eric's meticulous cleaning schedule. However, she enjoyed a tour of the Georgia coast, seeing the Aquarium where Eric works, and introducing Eric to more family members. If you need a recipe, Eric highly recommends the pigs in a blanket she made him during childhood.

Jim Carlson

Father of the Groom

James, of Normal, IL, is a father of three and grandfather of four. In addition to hiking with his wife, Pat, he enjoys watching the Cubs and Bears play. During Eric's childhood, Jim supported Eric's extracurricular endeavors - he took him to Scouts events, endured frequent trips to the pet store at Eric's request, and encouraged him to participate in Swim Team. He recently won a battle with a raccoon living in his roof, which Eric had pointed out to him months beforehand. Ask him for raccoon stories!

Justin

Groomsman of Honor

Eric and Justin met in college at Western Illinois University. Some favorite memories together include going camping and surviving a horrible math class together. In college, Eric would try to wake him up, but he would just continue to snooze. Justin is a loyal friend who always looks out for Eric's best interests - trying to protect him from the "crazy" ones. Somehow, after a phone interrogation at the start of Eric and Julie's relationship, he gave her the seal of approval.

Carl

Groomsman of Honor

Carl and Eric met in college at Western Illinois University. They bonded over a love for Jeeps, and enjoy talking about cars. In college, they once took Carl's black Jeep to Walmart at night, because there was not much else to do. When they got pulled over for speeding, the cop shined a light into the car to illuminate a box of women's shoes! Eric, being Eric, did not judge, and it became a fond memory that he enjoys sharing. Besides late night misadventures, Carl, Justin, and Eric have gone to haunted houses, camping, and to the beach over the course of their long friendship.

Nathan

Groomsman of Honor

Eric and Nathan grew up together, for as long as Eric can remember. Their childhood homes are a block apart, and they went through grade school together. If you think of an idyllic childhood friendship, it's probably pretty close to what they shared: riding bikes, swim team, and trips to Nathan's grandfather's farm. Nathan and his wife even braved the local pizza restaurant when they came to visit Eric in Riverdale a few years ago.

Julie Bainbridge

Bride

Julie's first love has always been animals, especially cats; she has had just about every kind of pet, except for birds. Even as a baby, she loved going to the zoo. She's also always loved naps, writing, camping, anthropology, and spending time in the forest, mountains, and/or beach. As she got older, she learned to appreciate fish, arthropods, and gardening. Aside from building a happy life with Eric, she dreams of traveling to even more global destinations.

Coleen Brubaker

Mother of the Bride

Julie's mom has always supported her in her ambitions, from allowing her to spend a week in Costa Rica at 15 and a summer in Japan at 16, to encouraging her to live in Oregon for college, as well as letting her live rent-free at home during the unpaid internship where Julie and Eric met, and pet-sitting while Julie and Eric traveled to Colombia and Ireland. She's invoked the phrase "Do you just want to look at the animals?" multiple times, which invariably ends up leading to adopting a new pet. Julie's mom even took in the stray cat that Eric and Julie rescued. She currently is retired in North Carolina, with her best friend, Linda.

Erin

Bridesmaid of Honor

Erin and Julie met during college orientation at Portland State University. Together, they have had many camping misadventures, gone to several National Parks, escaped a tornado, and sent a pizza delivery guy back 3 times for the right cinnamon stick icing. While they were college roomates, they rescued a very old, very sick stray cat named Boss, who ended up living into his 20's and loved watching cartoons with them. Erin helped Eric select an engagement ring, by usefully telling him, "The ring doesn't matter as much as the person giving it. Also, no blood diamonds."

Mayte

Bridesmaid of Honor

Mayte and Julie met in 6th grade, and quickly bonded over their shared love of The Simpsons, Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, and animals. In high school, they were basically inseparable - especially around "Halloweenies." They have shared as many key life events as they can, from graduations to quinceñaeras to baby's first birthday. Mayte loves weddings and is very excited to celebrate with Julie and Eric!

Tamara

Bridesmaid of Honor

Tamara and Julie met in 1st grade almost 30 years ago, when Julie asked Tamara how she grew her hair so long, and Tamara responded, "My mom just gives me new conditioner and whoo! It grows more." They grew up like sisters, in part because they lived only a block away from each other, and in part because Julie spent the night at Tamara's on a weekly basis. Tamara, Eric, and Julie once went on a brief visit to New Orleans together, where Eric earned Tamara's seal-of-approval through their shared love of dinosaurs, sharks, and Julie.

Jezeca

Officiant

Jezeca met Eric at the Georgia Aquarium, and they became friends on their shared interest in dinosaurs and Jurassic Park. Julie and Jezeca then bonded over dogs and being Hufflepuffs. They were even, very briefly, roommates! Jezeca is funny, charismatic, and always a good time - we are so grateful she agreed to go through the grueling process of becoming an ordained wedding officiant (filling out a form online). We recognize her authority to solemnize our marriage (and, truly, she put in a lot of work and is taking the role seriously)

Vada

Flower Girl

Vada loves to swim, dance, and do gymnastics. She is a loving big sister, and thrives on new experiences, like trying Japanese-style ramen! During a visit to Atlanta, she rescued a tired lightning bug (firefly) on a hike.

Azalea

Flower Girl

Azalea loves reading, science, and gymnastics. She is an active Girl Scout, and our go-to Cookie Seller. When we asked her to be a flower girl for us, she was very excited to tell her teacher about it!

Warren

Ring Bearer

Warren loves Minecraft, NERF war with his dad, and Batman. He can be found practicing his ninja skills, acting in class plays, and watching Ghostbusters cartoons on long car rides. Warren is very excited to be a ring bearer!

Eivin

Ring Bearer

Eivin loves LEGO, turtles, and engineering. An early reader, he once went through most of a book of LEGO minifigures with Julie. His kindergarten career goal was to be a LEGO engineer, but for now, he is happy to be a ring bearer.
