Rental Car
We have used this company for multiple trips with no issues, low security deposit requirement. As with all of the rental car companies, the pick up location is off-site from the airport; they do offer free pick up and drop off in San Jose. If you fly into Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), select the San Jose International Airport pick up option. For peace of mind, I recommend selecting the highest insurance package option. Due to the nature of the roads and places to park, there are many opportunities to pick up random dings and scratches.
Rental Car
We have used this rental company a couple of times, no major issues. The location is off-site from the Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), but they offer shuttle service from the airport. They tend to have a higher security deposit. For peace of mind, I recommend selecting the highest insurance package option. Due to the nature of the roads and places to park, there are many opportunities to pick up random dings and scratches.
Travel Note
Shuttle Services may sometimes be an affordable option for travel if you intend to stay in one or two locations during your stay. Private or shared options are available, and will typically go to many of the popular destinations in Costa Rica. It can be a stress free option if you are worried about driving or taking care of a car in a foreign place. Some websites below, but there are many other options to find online: https://www.iltcostarica.com https://www.transportationincostarica.com https://www.easyridecostarica.com https://tropicaltourshuttles.com https://www.ridecr.com
Travel Note
Taxis near the airport- The only legitimate taxis at Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), are the orange taxis. The taxi drivers are usually located at the airport exit once you go through the final luggage scanners, and will likely call out to you. They are typically expensive but when you have a lot of luggage it may be a convenient option if you are trying to go somewhere nearby. Taxis elsewhere - The official taxis in other locations are red with a yellow triangle. These are safer than unofficial taxis, but can still be somewhat pricey. In the city, they will have a meter, but sometimes in the beach towns it is common to not see a meter. If no meter, you should verify the price before you use the taxi. Sometimes they can take credit card, but not always so expect to pay with cash. If you pay in USD, they will usually give back Colones for change. If you have the option of Uber, I highly recommend it over the taxis. Uber - Uber is available in Costa Rica, very cheap and relatively simple to use. One person will need to sit in the front passenger seat as the service is not legally sanctioned by the government, despite the company operating in the country for years. It is widely available in the San Jose greater metropolitan area, and other larger population centers, however in smaller towns and more isolated areas availability can be spotty to non-existent, so do not rely on this as a sole means of transportation. If you plan to use Uber from Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), you will need to go to the bus stop located beyond the parking garage next to the main street, Uber drivers will avoid pick ups near the taxis. There is no cover from rain at the bus stop.
Flight
The main airport of Costa Rica, located in the central valley region just west of San Jose. It is the closest airport to the wedding venue. Due to the central location, it is the best option for either coast.
Flight
Located in Liberia, this airport is geared more specifically towards the Guanacaste and Nacoya regions of Costa Rica. It is furthest from the wedding venue, but if your travel plans are centered around this region, it may be a solid option.
We're making a list of our favorite activities and sights in the area. Check back soon.
Mid-November is towards the end of Costa Rica's rainy season, where it could rain every day but usually the frequency begins to drop off. That being said, climate change has made the seasons a little less predictable in recent years, so plan for rain just in case. Costa Rica has many "micro-climates" which means the overall weather can vary depending on location, over small distances. Beaches tend to be very hot and humid, while mountains can be cool enough to need a hoodie. Research where you plan to visit and plan for each location.
Credit cards are usually accepted in many scenarios, but it's a good idea to carry some cash as not all places accept credit cards. Most will accept USD, but will you will typically receive Colones for change regardless of which currency you provide. Additionally, USD bills should not be larger than $20 and need to be in very good condition i.e no tears, excessive marks.
