Danielle had a feeling the moment she saw Arjun: a flurry of butterflies. It was like that Andrew Bird song they both like - when you meet someone and it rearranges your molecules. Danielle still remembers that gut feeling from the first time they met. In September 2020, right after defending her PhD, Danielle moved to Busan, South Korea, at the height of the COVID pandemic. Arjun, in the final stages of his PhD, was just trying to survive grad school. It wasn’t exactly the ideal time for love. For over a year, they were just colleagues and friends. Danielle, harboring a quiet crush, usually noticed Arjun in a crowded room - but kept her distance. Eventually, a few friends let Arjun in on Danielle’s secret - it was so high school. He was skeptical that this was true as he hadn't suspected anything, but he started paying attention back in a crowded room. And in true K-drama fashion, things progressed slowly: lingering glances, a hand brushing past, a head resting on a shoulder. By Danielle’s 30th birthday in 2021, it was clear to them about their mutual feelings. On the eve of her birthday, Arjun quietly asked her out. She said yes, and so began their story, set against the backdrop of Busan’s beaches, mountain temples, cafes, and smoky samgyeopsal BBQ joints. They bonded over books, science, music, and politics. Somewhere in those late nights and long weekends, they found a lot of shared interests and values. In 2022, Danielle was accepted into a prestigious fellowship with the Department of Energy in Washington, DC. It meant 1.5 years of long-distance, navigating mismatched time zones with virtual movie nights and FaceTime calls. They visited each other’s families: Arjun embraced Danielle’s cozy, food-filled Thanksgiving; Danielle braved the spice, chaos, and mosquitoes of an Indian Christmas. Through time, travel, and Arjun’s PhD defense, their love endured. Finally, on New Year’s Day 2024, Arjun moved to DC. Life became morning walks by the Washington Monument, PNW backpacking trips (meticulously planned by Danielle’s mom Tammy), and cozy Saturdays with home-cooked meals and lofi beats. By summer, they knew they wanted to build a life together. On July 6th, Arjun proposed in Danielle’s favorite place, Hillwood Estate’s Japanese Garden, after a top-secret mission with her closest friends. She said yes. And now, they’re inviting you to celebrate the next chapter in their story, a story that began with climate science, survived distance and time zones, and is now a life partnership.
