In June 2021, at a birthday party at Sky Hotel in Johannesburg, two strangers met—and somehow it felt like they’d known each other forever. It was love at first sight on both sides, the kind that arrives without warning and refuses to be ignored. He walked up with a smile and the first words he ever said to her were, “Hi, Angel.” She answered immediately, “That’s not my name,” making it clear she wasn’t about to be won over that easily. But he didn’t hesitate. With the kind of confidence that sounds almost impossible in the moment, he told her he was going to marry her. Anyone who knows her will know she openly denied it—quickly and loudly. And yet, somewhere beneath the denial, she quietly knew it was true.
