Question

What can I expect on the wedding day?

Answer

Milni Members of both families come together and exchange garlands, signifying the bond between the families. Breakfast Takes place in the Langar Hall. Anand Karaj The Anand Karaj is the Sikh wedding ceremony, meaning "Blissful Union." It is conducted in the presence of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and binds the bride and groom together in a spiritual union. Laavan As part of the marriage nuptials, four hymns are sung as a means to unite the bride and groom. As the hymns are recited and sung, the couple respectfully walks around the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Langar (lunch)

Question

What can I expect when I arrive at the Gurdwara?

Answer

Upon arriving, please cover your head. There will be bandanas provided for men. Women are encouraged to wear scarves, you may bring your own or take one that will be provided. Please take your shoes off in the dedicated shoe room (there will be signs directing you where to go). For breakfast and lunch, if you are able-bodied, please sit on the floor to eat. There will be tables and chairs provided for those who are not able-bodied.

What do I wear for the ceremony?

Answer

For women, we encourage you to wear a salwar kameez or ethnic clothes. You can find these at local Indian clothing boutiques, or websites like Lashkaraa, Resha India and Image.pk. Please do not purchase a sari or lehenga — you will be sitting on the floor cross-legged during the ceremony. If you would prefer not to purchase clothing, please dress modestly — covered shoulders and dress pants or slacks are encouraged. Men can wear suits or dress pants with button-down shirts. Please do not wear jeans or shorts.
