3. Saigon Travel Guide

Travel Note

Saigon Daytime

- Eat and shop at Ben Thanh market: remember to haggle your heart out if you want to buy stuff - Independence Palace: to see where the fall of Saigon took place - War remnants museum: see artifacts leftover from the Vietnam war, including planes, helicopters, and tanks. - Admire some French colonial archiecture eg - Opera house - Central post office - Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon - Motorbike street food tour (possible option Saigon food tour https://www.instagram.com/saigonhappytour?igsh=dmN5OGdvM3ZsYnhl). Or if you're not game to get on the back of a motorbike, check out the stalls at Bến Nghé Street Food. - Spend the arvo cooling off in a rooftop infinity pool eg https://lavelasaigon.com (around $20pp entry). - Chill in one of Saigon's ridiculously trendy upmarket cafes eg - Bakes Pasteur https://bakes-saigon.com - Soko https://sokocakebakebrunch.com/ - XLIII https://xliiicoffee.com/ (or experience the real Saigon and just grab a coffee from a roadside stall for 1/5 the price lol) - If you need a break from the city's relentless energy, take a stroll through Tao Dan Park

Travel Note

Saigon Night-time

- Wander down Pho Di Bo Nguyen Hue: Walking street, and soak up the frenetic energy. - Go to a live music bar eg Fang pub - Visit a rooftop bar eg Social Club Rooftop Bar at Hotel des Arts Saigon (noticing a theme? Rooftops are generally recommended 🛖) - For real party animals only: go to the "OTHER" walking street Pho Bia Bui Vien aka Beer street. Very alcoholic, very noisy, and dirty HAHA. Be warned, this place is wild even by southeast asia standards. And the bars with scantily clad girls dancing out the front WILL try to overcharge your bill 💸

Travel Note

Outside Saigon

- Mekong delta tour, including cuchi tunnels. This is quite cookie-cutter tour bus tourism, but it's a lot of fun and well worth doing. Crawl through (a replica of) the tunnels used by the Viet Cong (and if you're keen, shoot an AK47 for extra cost), cruise through canals in a wooden canoe, and generally get a taste of life in the mekong delta. Can be done as a one-day tour, or as a two-day with a home-stay overnight (recommended).

How to get around

Use Grab or Xanh SM mobile app to book your ride, and remember to keep your eyes on their current offers! They both always have amazing offers for new users.

Travel Note

Places to stay

Our venue is in District 1 (CBD). For convenience, do focus on District 1, District 2 (expat town), District 3, or Binh Thanh district. They are pretty close to our venues. Otherwise, anywhere within less than 5km radius of District 1 is fine!

Local safety tips

Some travel tips for first-time visitors: - Don't take a taxi from the airport, they're very likely to overcharge or do some kind of scam. Use Grab or Xanh SM app to get a ride (use airport wifi if you don't have a SIM card yet). And check that the licence plate no. matches the one in the app. There are scammers who wander round in grab tshirts and claim they're your driver. - The airport has counters where you can buy a local SIM card with 4G. Good idea to get this set up before you head outside and order a grab. - Watch your pocket when you're in crowds, especially in markets. Violent crime is rare in Vietnam, but pickpocketing and other petty theft is common. - When crossing the street, don't run or make any sudden movements. Just walk slowly and calmly, and the motorbikes will go around you! - You won't need vaccinations for Saigon, but they are recommended for more remote places. - It will be very hot in Saigon, but if you're travelling to the north, it's wintertime and will actually be quite cold. - Maybe this is obvious, but don't drink the tap water.
