Flight
We suggest planning to fly into José María Córdova International Airport (MDE). There are many flights available with one stopover from most US cities. You also might choose to fly to Bogota (BOG) and then fly to Medellin. José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) Airport is located about 30-40 minutes from El Poblado, which is the most common area to stay for tourists in Medellin.
Travel Note
We recommend using the private airport transfer we have provided information for. Please add your flight and WhatsApp information to the Google Sheet under "View" below. You can also take Uber into Medellin from the airport, though there is no official Uber pickup zone. Drivers will likely request you to sit in the front seat. This is normal here, so do not be alarmed.
Travel Note
If you wish to "explore the space" and find your own accommodations, we highly recommend guests limit their search to the borough of El Poblado, as it is considered one of the safest neighborhoods in Medellin. Other alternatives include the municipality of Envigado, which is in the Southern part of the city, and has great scenery, but lacks hotel options. This area would be mostly for AirBnB rentals. For cheaper alternatives, downtown is a more budget-friendly sector and closer to many of the city’s museums, but it’s not as aesthetic as other areas. Below are a few recommendations, along with promo codes you can use to secure fixed rates at these nearby properties:
Hotel
For guests looking for a more convenient option, this hotel offers smaller rooms but is located closer to everything, making it easy to explore and get around. It’s also less than 30 minutes from the wedding venue, making it a great choice for accessibility and ease. For the time being, reservations can be made via WhatsApp. Simply look online for the type of room you would like to book, then mention that you were referred by Wink Eventos and provide the names of the bride and groom: Brielle Ruiz and Amine Ouadghiri.
Travel Note
Colombia is the "City of Eternal Spring" and has only rainy and dry seasons. The wedding festivities will be around the start of the dry season. Temperatures will fluctuate between the mid 70’s and low 80’s during the daytime and 60's during the nighttime . Sunrise/sunset are approximately around 6:15 am/pm.
There is an elevated-train (Metro) that connects the city from North to South, as well as the city’s gondola system (MetroCable). There are multiple bus-lines (MetroPlus) that connect to the Metro system. In addition, taxis and Uber are available. As a rule of thumb, avoid taking a cab from the street. Book online, by phone, or through your hotel reception. Shopping malls also have official Taxi stands. Car rental is another option, but keep in mind most cars in Medellin are manual transmission. This is a more expensive service compared to the US, and we would not recommend, especially when public transportation is cheap and reliable.
Luckily, we can recommend a great company called Feel Tourism Experiences, which offers a wide variety of excursions as well as transportation services around Medellín. If you’re interested, please feel free to reach out to them via WhatsApp using the phone number provided above.
Travelers must complete Migración Colombia’s online Check-Mig form (https://www.migracioncolombia.gov.co/check-mig) within 72 hours of boarding an inbound or outbound flight from Colombia. If the normal form’s website is down travelers can find a contingency website (https://apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co/pre-registro/public/preregistro.jsf).
The currency in Colombia is Colombian pesos ($). Denominations are in the thousands. Lately, the conversion rate has been 3800 COP to 1 USD. Most common bills are 2, 5, 10 and 20 thousand pesos. There are also coins for 100, 200, 500, 1000 pesos if you get change. There are 2 other bills which correspond to 50 and 100 thousand pesos - try to avoid having these unless shopping, as they are hard to break for change when needed. While many places accept credit card, there are also places that only accept cash, so we would suggest visiting an ATM upon arrival and having some cash on you at all times. The rates at the airport are pretty good, so if you want to exchange there, you are getting a fair rate. Use ATMs within grocery stores, malls, and shopping centers - not on the street. As an additional safety measure, don't go extract cash from an ATM and leave right away. With currency rate almost 4 to 1, public bus or metro will cost you less than a dollar. Most uber rides will be less than 5 USD. Cost of food varies, but meals can be anywhere from 3-10 USD/person, unless you are eating somewhere fancy.
Colombia, especially Medellín, is known for its beautiful weather, vibrant culture, and is ranked among the best cities for Americans to retire and visit. The locals, known as Paisas, are warm, friendly, and always happy to help travelers feel at home. Like any major city, it’s important to be mindful and use common sense. Most incidents tend to happen around transportation, so we recommend using rideshare apps or reputable taxis rather than hailing one on the street. When using public transportation, keep valuables out of sight and enjoy the scenery without distractions. Scams are uncommon in Medellín compared to other tourist destinations, and locals are generally honest and fair. Taxis typically use meters, but it’s a good idea to carry small bills, as drivers may not always have change. Overall, Medellín is a safe, welcoming city when you travel smart: move in groups when possible, use trusted transportation, and trust your instincts. We’re so excited to share this special place with you and can’t wait to celebrate together! 💛 🇨🇴
Unlike remote locations in the country, tap water quality is excellent, completely safe to drink, and likely tastes better than most places in the US. :) If you are traveling to smaller towns or other areas outside of the city, then stick to bottled or filtered water.
Tipping in Colombia is not required like in the US. However, if you are served well, it is common courtesy to leave anywhere 10% at most.
