Our Engagement

12.17.22

Every year we go to Savannah the weekend before Christmas for the Sutherland Family Christmas weekend. It’s a weekend I’ve always looked forward to and cherished, because it’s a weekend spent with family that we hardly see. I got off work Friday around lunch and Alex had the car loaded and ready to go on our 5 hour drive. We got to my Aunt and Uncle’s house and of course I got lost in the conversations with family members and the food. We woke up Saturday morning and had a relaxing breakfast and then a low country boil for lunch. We then sat down to play our dirty Santa game. We play this game differently every year and I can never keep up with the rules, and I was apparently very oblivious to my surroundings this year. As we are going through the game there is this pickle ball set that has gone back and forth between Alex and my dad. Alex has always said he wants to learn to play pickle ball in PSJ so I was just thinking he really wanted the pickle ball set. Well Alex was the last number and his card said “Take a present, any present and give it to the person who means the most to you.” All I could think was, “He is going to steal whatever present my mom has been wanting and give it to her for brownie points.” Well he gets up, goes to my dad (who has the pickle ball set) and I was like what is this obsession with pickle ball!? Then I notice my brother in law is holding his phone awfully weird, my cousins eyes get huge, and Alex is on one knee asking me to marry him. I was obviously shocked, sweating, shaking and at a loss of words. Poor Alex is staring at me and goes, “Welllll??” And I finally give him a, “Yes of course!!” and a huge hug, then yes I cried. It was the perfect afternoon spent with family and I couldn’t have asked for a better proposal!
