Valentina's Hot Tips

The Wedding Website of Adriel Donates and Valentina Donates
This is Valentina's Declassified Colombia Survival Guide on what to do around her home country!

Travel Note

Tip #1: Download Whatsapp

Colombia uses Whatsapp for everything communication-related. It would also help to use it if you don't have an international data plan. Make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi, and you can call, text, and FaceTime there.

Travel Note

Tip #2: Avoid taking taxis

Taxi drivers in Colombia are mean and overpriced. They will try to scam you if they get a chance. Instead, use the Indrive App or Didi. (Uber is banned in Colombia)

Travel Note

Tip #3: Always carry cash

Most places (especially small businesses) prefer cash payments or don't have card readers (also, the international fees are a bitch). Try always to have smaller bills like 2k, 5k, 10k, or 20k COP because small businesses might not take a Hundred pesos bills.

Travel Note

Tip #4: Sales tax is always included

In Colombia, all taxes are included with the selling price, so you don't need to do the math in your head.

Travel Note

Tip #5: Always ask for your receipts!!!

If you want to get back some of the money you spent on taxes, always ask for your receipts. Some small businesses will not provide them, but most chains and big companies are legally obligated to do so. When you buy clothes, food, etc., they might ask for your ID, to which you have to give your passport number so you can bring all your receipts to the airport (this takes time; please go at least 3 hours before your flight) and find the tax refund office to fill out the forms and get some of your tax money back.

Travel Note

Tip #6: Always call

The culture in Colombia revolving around booking things/reserving appointments is very much centered on direct communication. If you would like to book or reserve something, the best way is to either go there in person or give them a call or text through Whatsapp.

Travel Note

Tip #7: Kayak and Cheapflights will save you a lot

We always use those 2 tools to get cheap flights, and they really work wonders. Try to avoid Spirit Airlines if you can and look for Latam or Avianca Airlines instead for a cheaper and more comfortable flight.

Travel Note

Tip #8: Exploring Colombia

Colombia is a vast country with a lot to offer. Depending on your interests, it would be best to plan your own vacation and travel to other towns/cities. For example: • Los Santos is very close to Chicamocha Canyon and its national park • Looking for extreme sports/activities? Visit San Gil • Want beaches and a tropical paradise? Head to Cartagena • Care to explore more of the urban lifestyle and more tourist attractions? Go to Medellin or Bogotá
