The Rest is History

Skyler and I first met through Meghan, my Maid of Honor. We actually met in person months before we ever started talking regularly, and while Meghan apparently saw the potential immediately, it took me a little longer. My first impression of Skyler was that he was crazy, incredibly high energy, and slightly funny. I definitely wasn't thinking, "I'm going to marry this guy." A few months later, we started talking more and eventually became friends. We texted all the time and started talking on the phone almost every night. Those calls would somehow last for hours, and somewhere along the way, I realized that the goofy, high-energy guy I had met was also one of the kindest, most thoughtful, honest, and generous people I knew. We could talk about absolutely anything, and before long, he became the person I looked forward to talking to every day. We're also pretty good at making each other laugh. We're definitely opposites, but one of the things that makes us work is that we never take ourselves too seriously. We can laugh at ourselves, laugh at each other, and turn almost anything into a funny story. Our first trip to Newport is a perfect example. It was pouring rain, and Skyler stopped at a gas station and bought the cheapest umbrella he could find because, according to him, not everything is a fashion show. While walking around The Breakers, the umbrella completely broke in the most cartoonish way possible. We stood there laughing before making a run for the car, laughing the entire way. Safe to say, I was in charge of picking out the new, very cute and stylish umbrella. It was only a little more expensive, and, unlike Skyler's first choice, it never broke. Years later, it's still going strong. When Skyler decided to propose, I was a little more surprised by the timing than he was. We went ring shopping in June 2025, and believe it or not, Skyler was the one pushing for an engagement while I was perfectly happy waiting a few more years. Once we found the ring, he told me I had six months. As we got closer to the end of that six months, the timeline became "between Thanksgiving and New Year's." Skyler is many things, but being good at keeping a secret is not one of them. I eventually narrowed it down to one date and was convinced I knew exactly what was going to happen. Angie, Skyler's mom, had won a five-course dinner at The Mansion at Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek in a charity auction and gave it to us. The date on the certificate happened to be the exact date I had picked for the proposal. So naturally, I thought I had it all figured out. (spoiler alert: the dinner wasn't real) Instead of taking me to dinner, Skyler parked near Turtle Creek Park and walked me to the lighted gazebo. He immediately got down on one knee and started his speech. I still find this move so funny. He had apparently been practicing his stance all day, so I guess he was pretty excited to finally show it off. Afterward, we got a few drinks just the two of us before heading to State and Allen, where our family and friends were waiting. I was so giddy I could barely talk at a normal speed and spent the entire night talking a thousand miles a minute. These days, we're usually sitting on the couch, traveling somewhere, or checking in with each other from across a room with our little half-heart hand signal that neither of us remembers starting. Now we're getting ready to get married, and I can't wait for more trips, more baseball stadiums, more Newport, more laughing at each other, and a lifetime of being Honey 1 and Honey 2. I guess Meghan was onto something after all.
