A fun, eclectic toy store for kids of all ages and one of the bride's, and the Flower Girl's, fond favorites. It's located in downtown Portsmouth, minutes from the docks at the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company and from the Hanover Parking Garage. Stop by to stock up on fun toys and activities to enjoy throughout your relaxing week on Star Island.
A classic challenge for young and old shoalers alike. This cave shares Native American and pirate history that most on the island are familiar with so ask around to learn the legend! School-age children can even enjoy this rock climbing cave during the daytime with adult supervision. This is a HARD hike with steep rocky inclines and declines, so be prepared with proper footwear. It's located in the rocks just beyond the Art Barn trail, but to the left of the large rock fissure before you reach the hill to East Rock. Worthy thrill seekers can opt to climb through either the Lemon or the Lime squeeze. *Pictured: Sam and Charli (from the wedding party) fearlessly, and safely, making their way through the Lemon squeeze cave*
An activity for only the bravest of shoalers! Wake up before the sun and join other health fanatics for an icy dip into the Atlantic Ocean at the end of the pier. *Pictured mid-dive, the Maid of Honor will likely INSIST you join in on the fun!*
Open to all visitors to Star Island, swing by to free paint, sketch, color, build, craft...whatever your artistic heart desires! Open daily based on hours posted by the Front Lobby on Star Island.
The Rutledge Marine lab offers science education for all ages from the perspective of an island community looking reflectively and critically at our culture and the future it is choosing. Each week the laboratory staff lead geology, botany, billy-goat hikes (on the rocks), low-tide and bird walks. Touch tanks and other hands-on activities are available as posted on-island daily. Some of the visitors we see and collect include invertebrates like Green Crabs, Frilled Sea Anenomes, lobsters, and Northern Sea Stars; fish like the Atlantic Mackerel, Longhorn Sculpin, Pollock, and Monkfish; and birds such as Eider Ducks, Common/Roseate Terns, and cormorants. Come check it out for yourself once you're on-island!

Star Island is many things to many people: A source of spiritual renewal, home to enriching experiences, filled with educational programming — and a great place for some good ol’ summer fun. Rent a rowboat and paddle to a neighboring island or around the harbor, then come back ashore for an exciting game of tennis or boccie ball. Take a refreshing plunge off the float and follow it up with a relaxing massage. There’s lots to do on Star Island. Just ask the friendly staff at the front desk of the Oceanic for information and reservations. Make the most of your island experience, whether as a week-long guest or just stopping by for the day, with fun activities for the whole family.
Activities posted daily on the blackboard in the main Lobby on Star Island, but range from morning and night chapel services (United Church of Christ affiliated, but all are welcome) to cooking/baking classes, night-owl 21+ activities, softball games, tennis tournaments, board games nights, lawn games, and so much more!
A favorite pastime of every Star Island visitor, but especially the bride's late Gamma Gale Flynn. Chairs are dispersed throughout the island to enjoy at your leisure.
Another bride and groom favorite, hike out past the Art Barn for some incredible horizon-to-horizon views over the Atlantic ocean. Named for its uncanny eastward facing positioning and arrow-head like shape, it's easy to imagine why sun rises from this spot are incredible. Although a rocky and fairly difficult hike out to the Eastern backside of the island, you'll finish rewarded by breathtaking views and salty sea breezes.
