Things To Explore

The Wedding Website of Stacy Menichelli and Jesse Nixon
Blowing Rock, NC is such a gorgeous place, that's part of why we knew we wanted to get married here. In early May, it can get chilly, so if you decide to explore, make sure you have layers and can add or remove as needed. There are great spots to hike, to walk, to shop, to eat and drink, all within Blowing Rock, and the nearby town of Boone, ten or so minutes away. Our favorite spots include Bass Lake, for a nice easy walk around, Cone Manor House off of the Blue Ridge Parkway for some gorgeous views and lots of carriage trails for gentler hikes, and just driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway as well. Check out our recommendations on our favorite things, but there is a lot more!

The Town Tavern

1182 Main Street, Blowing Rock, NC 28605

We love going here for a yummy casual lunch or dinner! Indoor and outdoor seating, and a generous sized bar inside.

Six Pence Pub

1121 Main Street, Blowing Rock, NC 28605

A charming little English pub on Main Street, you'll see it by the red police box out front. Delicious food, some of which that isn't found in our area of the country.

Blue Deer on Main

960 Main Street, Blowing Rock, NC 28605

Blue Deer used to just be a little trailer on hwy 321, open in the summer. Now that they have a storefront in Blowing Rock and Boone, they're open all year long! Stop by for some delicious ice cream sandwiches, made with Homeland Creamery's ice cream, which is just down the road from our house in Greensboro! It's the best!

The Blowing Rock

432 The Rock Road, Blowing Rock, NC 28605

The town of Blowing Rock was named after THE Blowing Rock, North Carolina's oldest travel attraction. The story of the Blowing Rock is based on a Native American legend about two lovers from different tribes. The rocks itself are very old, and a great place to get a view of the skyline of the mountains, including Grandfather Mountain. Handicap accessible and pet friendly, is a fun affordable destination.

The Cone Manor

6570 Blue Ridge Parkway, Blowing Rock, NC 28605

The craft center will be closed until memorial day, but the manor house was built by Moses Cone, of the Cone Denim Mills in Greensboro. It was their summer escape. As such, there is an extensive network of carriage trails with fine gravel for walking. You can hike up to their cemetery or the fire tower, go into the maze and pass the apple barn, orchards, and loop around Bass Lake, or take even longer trails. The trails are also marked on google maps!

Original Mast General Store

Sugar Grove, NC 28679

We visit here every anniversary! The Mast General Store has grown in their locations since they restored the original general store in the 1980's, but they continue to sell from the old building still today. Check out the Little Red Schoolhouse behind for great clearance and deals, and stop by the candy barrel and annex just down the road. Next to the candy barrel and annex down a long road is also Valle Crucis Park, where you can head to the back of the park and dip your toes in the chilly Watauga River!

Boone

Boone, NC

Home of Appalachian State University, there are a LOT of places to check out in Boone! Many places to eat, to shop, and some hidden parks as well. If you need a Wal-Mart, mall, drugstore or hospital, Boone has them. It's hard to pick just one place to visit down here. It's worth a drive to walk downtown and check out shops, or even go eat at Dan'l Boone Inn, a family-style southern restaurant. Make sure to come early as there will be a wait, and they do NOT accept cards, only cash or check!
