Sometimes in life, people can be in the same place, share the same friends, and still never meet—until the timing is just right. That’s how it was for Sky and Adam. Both students at Loyola Marymount University, they somehow managed to orbit each other for years without crossing paths. It wasn’t until the end of Adam’s junior year and Sky’s sophomore year that they finally met. Their paths crossed a house known as “The Lab”—a Sigma Chi house, at 8384 Stewart Ave, more known for late nights and pre-games than anything else. Adam was ready for a night off after a long semester of glamorous work on film sets (carrying equipment that weighs more than him and getting a nice sunburn). Sky had just finished her last final and had every intention of staying in to pack for her move the next morning, but Amelia and Chris convinced her otherwise. In the middle of the living room of The Lab stood a bar (if you could even call it that), constructed out of plywood and decorated with yellow and blue paint, leaning like it might collapse. Their friend Liam Namba called out a drinking game called “Dirty Underwear," a game aptly named for how jarring the consequences of the game are. (The game requires each player to burn a piece of paper suspended over a cup with a coin balanced in the middle, and once the coin falls in, the loser drinks the ashy beer.) Sky and Adam happened to stand next to each other during the game, both trying to get the other to lose. Neither of them lost the game, but it was enough to break the ice. Everyone left to continue the night at Senator Jones, where their friends were throwing the biggest end-of-semester party. Adam and Sky parted ways, each taking their own Uber to Senator Jones and not knowing if they’d see each other again. Although the ambiance of Senator Jones doesn't lend itself to meeting your soulmate (hundreds of sweaty college students jumping around to Mo Bamba), it did for Adam and Sky. Once Adam and Sky reconnected, they stuck together the rest of the night. They ended up back at The Lab, talking for hours on the couch as the night faded into morning. By 5 a.m., Sky remembered she had to pack up and move out of her on-campus apartment in just a few hours. That night was only the beginning. Unplanned, simple, and exactly right. And from then on? They’ve been together ever since. And people say parties are a waste of time...
