Moments before the proposal, Julia found this video on a bench in Ward A. Montgomery Park - the spot where quiet Sundays became our story's favorite chapter.

A Bench Made of Mornings

Featured on the Chicago Parks Magazine - Summer '25 Issue

When we got engaged, it wasn’t on a mountaintop or in a candlelit restaurant. It was on a bench in Ward A. Montgomery Park, beside the river where our story had quietly taken shape. For years, Sunday mornings followed a familiar rhythm: coffee in hand, a pistachio donut from the Firecakes truck parked around the corner, and a long walk along the Chicago River. We’d pause to admire the skyline or laugh at the dogs sprinting across the grass. It was our time to reconnect – where grocery lists turned into life goals, and a weekend routine became something much more. Eventually, that stretch of green space became “our place.” From one apartment window just across the park, we could see those same trees and that winding path. It was there that one of us first said, “I love you.” The park had witnessed the small moments that built our life together. It felt only right that it would hold the next one, too. Leading up to the proposal, Dan worked with the Chicago Parks Foundation to place a commemorative bench at our favorite spot. That fall morning, we followed our usual route. When we reached the bench, it was covered in a blanket, as if waiting for someone. We sat together. Slowly, Julia pulled the blanket back and read the inscription: “In the park where our mornings began and my heart found its home in you. Julia & Dan, Fall 2024.” When she looked up, he was already on one knee. We still take the same walk most weekends. But now we sit a little longer. We read. We talk about wedding planning, or we don’t talk at all. Sometimes we just watch the water. The bench is personal, but it’s also a small gesture toward the public spaces that give so much without asking for anything in return. We hope it invites others to pause, to reflect, or to start a routine of their own with someone they love. We’re grateful to have a corner of the city that knows our story and offers a seat for whatever comes next – for us, and for whoever needs a quiet place to begin something of their own.
