How We Met

He took her out for a nice seafood dinner

Patrick & Molly were set up on a blind date by mutual friends. The day Patrick met Molly he learned an important lesson about following-up. Having not called Molly since he first asked her to dinner, Patrick got a call (thanks, Rachel) reminding him about his dinner date. But he hadn’t forgotten. Or had he? They had dinner at the Beachcomber (thanks, Oli). Patrick had just accepted a new job—in Tampa! Molly didn’t know. After a suitable number of drinks and conversation, Patrick told Molly that night about his move. Molly took it. . .well, the best that can be said is that Molly took the news quite well for someone who is told that their first date is probably their last date. Or was it? Before Patrick’s move, they went on a few more dates and concluded that it really was a shame it had to end. Fortunately for Patrick, distance makes the heart grow fonder, he was able to convince Molly to come up and visit. Patrick would visit Molly and Molly would visit Patrick. And so on. Patrick & Molly were both Southwest A-Listers, and tired of living their weekends in a second city. Molly got a call from the Lightning. They had her resume from an earlier application (marking the first time in history someone actually meant it when they said “well, you’re overqualified for this job, but I’ll keep your resume on file”) and wanted to see her right away. After 7 seasons with the Dolphins, Molly joined the Lighting—and Patrick—in Tampa. The following fall, Patrick & Molly travelled to Costa Rica. After an all-day hike with a private tour guide (Molly actually believed that the other couple in the tour group “got sick” and canceled), as they reached the vista at the base of a volcano, it began to pour. They went back to their villa where Patrick got on one knee and asked Molly to marry him. And then asked again, since whatever it was that came out of her mouth wasn’t in English and certainly wasn’t a “yes.” Molly did say “yes,” though—eventually and after quite a lot of crying.
