How It Started -- John's Account

UMASS Amherst - 2015/2016

We first met the beginning of Senior year at UMass Amherst in our mutual friends' apartment above a local pizza parlor, Bruno's. Jen was sporting a pink blouse and heels—quite fitting for the vivacious personality I would eventually come to love. Although my interest was certainly piqued, such was not the case on Jen's end. My numerous attempts to engage her in conversation that night yielded no results. I guess my mop of hair, sports jersey-centric wardrobe, and drawstring knapsacks full of beer didn’t warrant Jen’s attention! Well, fast forward many months later, to May 2016, nearing graduation, when Jen and I had each wrapped up our respective finals. We were both looking to celebrate that night, and as fate would have it, ended up at one of the many local watering holes, Olde Towne Tavern. While in conversation with one of our friends, toting pitchers of Amherst's finest ale (Bud Light), I cast an affectionate stare towards Jen, which was reciprocated in kind. Finally, an opportunity to strike up a real conversation. Well, lo and behold, Jen came right up to me, and before I could say anything, asked me…MY NAME?! It appeared a, then, recent haircut, where I reluctantly chopped off shoulder-length hair, had a similar effect on Jen’s memory! Now, typically when a girl you’ve admired, and been previously acquainted with several times over by now, believes you are someone else entirely, there is reasonable skepticism as to any long-term prospects. Any doubts I may have had in that moment quickly subsided, however, as there seemed to be an undeniable chemistry with this girl. That is to say, both the drinks, and conversation, were endlessly flowing! As the night progressed, our group made its way to another Amherst favorite, Monkey Bar, where Jen and I danced the night away. After we worked up an appetite, we broke off from our friends, and grabbed a couple slices of pizza from Antonio's. It was a truly perfect night. The rest is history.
