Few cemetaries are as scenic as this one. Visible in the distance is the Elk Coast stretching down to Bridgeport and Manchester.
From 1906 to 1967, everything from cars to batteries to bottles, cans and appliances were unceremoniously pushed over the cliffs into the ocean — a common practice of seaside cities for centuries. Mother Nature responded to this abuse with a nice surprise in the form of smooth, colored sea glass treasure in a rainbow of colors.
Ten Mile Beach is the long stretch of coastline at Inglenook Fen Ten Mile Dunes Preserve in MacKerricher State Park. The beach, which is actually about four miles long, starts at the north end of Main Beach and continues all the way to Ten Mile Creek. Between these two points is a vast dunes structure that is almost a mile wide. A rough path (an old paved “Haul Road”) used to follow the back of the beach where hikers and horseback riders could travel without damaging the dunes and protected plants and animal habitats.
On the rugged Mendocino Coast, Jug Handle State Natural Reserve beckons visitors with spectacular ocean views, peaceful forests, and a hike through half a million years of ecological history. The reserve’s 2.5-mile Ecological Staircase Trail explores three wave-cut terraces formed by the continental glaciers, rising seas, and tectonic plates that built the Coast Range. Few places on earth display a more complete record of how geology, soils, and plants change over time
Visitors to the Navarro River Redwoods State Park can enjoy picnicking, swimming, and camping. The park is popular with anglers, canoeists, and kayakers in the late winter and spring.
At the edge of the Pacific Ocean, the beach at Schooner Gulch State Beach near Mendocino, looks as though its been scattered with oversized bowling balls. Almost perfectly spherical, stones like these have caused wild speculation wherever they’ve been discovered, with answers from aliens to dinosaurs.
The Point Arena Lighthouse stands as an iconic figure on the landscape of the American Pacific Coast. No other lighthouse offers such a fully interactive experience in the exchange between history, science and natural beauty. Sometimes brilliantly sunny, other times fog-shrouded and mysterious, always ruggedly beautiful, the lighthouse is a place to find something different, a place where the romance is real and the experience is profound.

Watch out when you snap a shot with the Rothschild Giraffes at B. Bryan Preserve! These rare critters have a habit of sneaking a kiss with visitors who “ooh and aah” over their elegant beauty, and with a tongue that's 18 inches long, that's quite a face-washing! The entire preserve is the perfect place to pretend you're on safari in the African veldt… and not in southern Mendocino County! Take a tour in a vintage Land Rover with the opportunity to get an up-close view of the majestic animals that roam the ranch. For a bonus, stay in one of the picture perfect cottages on-site.
Head to the Apple Farm when the trees are bursting with blooms in the spring or heavy with ripe apples in the fall. The honor system farm stand offers heritage apples and pears grown on the farm, as well as homemade jams, chutneys, cider and other assorted goodies to enjoy at home. Strike a pose among the apple trees or in the French-style garden that has surprises at every turn. If you love to cook, this is just the place for a mid-week “stay and cook” getaway! Find the Apple Farm on the Philo-Greenwood Road just off Highway 128.

Greenwood State Beach offers beach access and a picturesque view of the Pacific Ocean. The central theme is of Greenwood / ELK as a lumber town in the late 1800's through the early 1900's. The Visitor Center is in the middle of town and provides a glimpse of what life was like in this lumber town during the late 1800's.
Beach and headlands walks located just south of Fort Bragg in the hamlet of Caspar. This area has miles of undeveloped beach adjacent to the headlands and a panoramic ocean view. The beach is a good place to watch for migrating gray whales. Fishing is also popular off the beach.

Mendocino Bay Overlook, which is less than a mile away from the Mendocino Headlands StatePark is a not so popular, yet a beautiful scenic viewpoint of the Mendocino Headlands and the Big River Beach. Drive past the bridge that crosses the Big River Beach, take the first left at Brewery Gulch Road and to the immediate right is the entrance to the Mendocino Bay Overlook.
