The villages of the Amana Colonies offers visitors the opportunity to step back from today’s busy pace, to relish in the comfort of locally crafted foods, wine, beers, furniture, art and more.
Iowa Amish are found most prominently in three locations in the state—near the towns of Kalona, Bloomfield, and in Buchanan County. Amish still operate today without electricity. The right time of year you can see them doing field work by horse. This community has a few different shops to enjoy from homemade baked goods to hand woven items.
Antique Archaeology is tucked away in the historic Mississippi River town of LeClaire, Iowa. It’s the birthplace of Buffalo Bill. The two-story former fabrication shop is the home base for the American Pickers Show on History Channel. It now houses some of our best picks and a new merchandise store.
Galena is a small town in northwest Illinois known for its well-preserved 19th-century buildings like the 1826 Dowling House. The Italianate Ulysses S. Grant Home was a gift from local citizens to the Civil War general who later became a U.S. president. Horseshoe Mound, on the outskirts of Galena, offers views of three states.
