Michael and Amanda first met at Michael's home in San Luis Obispo. He was hosting a party for the Cal Poly League of Legends (an online PC video game) club, to view the World Finals Match. Days prior, Amanda was thinking that she wanted to go to the party, but didn't know anyone and wasn't going to attend. In a stroke of fate, Amanda overheard then-Cal-Poly-classmate, now-bridesmaid Brittany Erwine talking about League of Legends and went over to talk to her. Brittany said she would go with Amanda to the party so that she wasn't alone. Worried that she wouldn't be able to attend because she hadn't paid her club dues, Amanda signed up to come to the Slocums' home early to help set up and pay her dues. Once Amanda & other club members volunteered to set up for the party, both Amanda and Michael had checked each other out on Facebook, thought "He/She's cute!" and resolved to introduce themselves to each other at some point that day. When Michael arrived at Cal Poly to pick up the volunteers, Amanda said "Ladies get shotgun!" to make sure she got to sit in front, next to Michael. Once at the Slocum residence, Ralph (Michael's father) and Amanda ended up splitting off to put up "Do not enter" signs on the upstairs bedroom doors. They ended up chatting for 30-45 minutes, and Michael later found Ralph and Amanda sitting on the couch upstairs chatting and having a jolly good time. Michael remembers thinking that any girl who could get along so easily with his Dad right away was worth getting to know. Michael played the part of busy host for most of the night, and Michael & Amanda didn't have much time to talk to each other. But because Amanda was feeling in such a helpful mood (wink), she volunteered to come back again the next day to help clean up after the party. Once clean-up was done and Amanda was leaving the house, Michael ran out to her, stopped her, and asked her on a date to Gopher Glen to get apple cider. Amanda LOVED this idea, and the rest was history! <3
Michael and Amanda were with the rest of the Slocum clan and some family friends in Montana for a 4th of July weekend at Two Totem Lodge. Michael brought the engagement ring that he and Amanda had designed together with him, and was carrying it around in his pocket each day, waiting for the right moment! On July 2nd, the Slocum family decided to go to Kootenai Falls, the largest waterfall in Montana by volume. After the short hike to reach the impressively beautiful falls, Amanda was taking a panorama photo. Michael showed the ring to his family behind Amanda's back, and signaled for them to get their phones ready to record. Michael tapped Amanda on the shoulder, and when she turned around, he was on one knee. Amanda was instantly in tears, and, of course, said yes! We are now set to marry 1 year and 1 day later. We can't wait to see you all!
Michael and Amanda met in 2014, but weren't dating each other continuously from then to today. Like any couple, they went through their fair share of difficulties and ended up breaking up after about 2.5 years of dating. They always loved each other dearly and felt that they were meant to be -- but they needed time apart to grow separately, to learn what they did and didn't want from relationships, etc. Although M & A both dated other people during their time apart (about 1.5 years), they both kept a door open for each other, and never gave up on the idea that they were meant to be together. Amanda spent her senior year at Cal Poly single, graduated, and moved back to Long Beach with her family. Michael stayed behind in San Luis Obispo, and worked for Next Intent. A long time later, on June 30th, 2018, M & A re-met in the grandest stroke of destiny ever. League of Legends LCS events happen Friday, Saturday, & Sunday every weekend for several months during summer, and M & A chose to attend one of these many events on the same exact day. Amanda was there with her friend Phuc, and Michael was there with another girl who he was "kind of dating" at the time. After one of the games ended, Amanda was in the stands of the studio and Michael was on the lower level giving the players high fives. She decided she would get a snack, and looked down to the ground level and locked eyes with Michael, who just happened to turn and look up at the bleachers at that moment. At that time, Amanda was under the impression that Michael was in San Luis Obispo, but here he was, in LA, at the same event as her!! Amanda walked down the bleachers to talk to Michael for the first time in years, and had this strange feeling that the man she was waiting for to come out from within Michael was here. M & A left the people they came with to go outside and chat for hours (sorry Phuc if you're reading this lol), got dinner together that night, and the rest was history. Destined to be together. <3
