Travel Note
On the northern shore of Denmark's Jutland Peninsula, a short ferry-ride from Kristiansand (Mia's hometown in Norway), is the coastal town of Hirtshals, Denmark. Although a bit out of the way, this small town is home to Maren's (Mia's mom's) summer cabin, and we think it's the perfect place to share our vows. Below, you will find some recommendations for getting to Tornby Strand in Hirtshals for the wedding. These suggestions are mostly geared toward our U.S. friends, who may be traveling a long distance to join us. Please feel free to reach out to us with travel questions, if you have them!
Flight
The nearest airport to Hirtshals with regular commercial flights is Aalborg Airport (Code: AAL), which is a 45 minute drive to Tornby Strand. Flights from the U.S. can be booked through Delta, KLM, Icelandair, and SAS (Scandinavian Airlines), with layovers in Reykjavik, Copenhagen, or Amsterdam. Flights to Aalborg can also be booked from other cities in Europe, with layovers generally in Copenhagen or Amsterdam. * For U.S. Travelers: we recommend booking U.S.--Aalborg flights that depart the evening of Thursday, June 13, 2024 and arrive in the morning or afternoon of Friday, June 14, 2024. We've done some flight investigations already, so if you have trouble finding flights, let us know!
Rental Car
The easiest way to get from Aalborg Airport to Tornby Strand or Hirtshals is with a rental car. This is our plan for getting to/from Hirtshals. There are several U.S. rental car companies operating out of Aalborg Airport, including Avis, Hertz, Budget, and Enterprise. We also see Europcar (www.europcar.dk), but we have not had direct experience with them. * Please let us know if you plan to fly into Aalborg for the wedding, we can help connect guests arriving at similar times and coordinate rides. Carpooling is a great way to make new friends!
Train
If you don't want to deal with a rental car, public transit is also an option. However, getting from Aalborg Airport to Tornby Strand or Hirtshals requires a few of transfers between trains and buses. * If public transport is your preferred mode of travel, let us know! We can share some info on bus/train connections we've found on Google and cross-referenced with Maren.
Hotel
Tornby Strand is a small beach community about 6 km (3.7 mi) from the center of Hirtshals. There are two hotels in Tornby Strand: Munchs and Hotel Strandlyst, both just a short walk to the beach. We have reserved Munchs for the wedding party, and we requested a block of rooms at the Hotel Strandlyst (18 Strandvejen, Hirtshals, DK) for guests. There are other hotel options in Hirtshals town center to consider as well. Although further from the wedding venue, these may be better for people interested in exploring the town. * For U.S. Guests: Please let us know if you would like to book a room at Hotel Strandlyst. The hotel owner doesn't always answer the phone for U.S. numbers, and there is a slight language barrier. We are planning to pre-book the block of rooms.
Travel Note
The Lodge at Little Seneca Creek is an awesome indoor/outdoor event space run by Montgomery County, and it is just a short drive from our current home in Rockville, MD. We recommend that guests plan to stay in Rockville, MD or in Washington, D.C.. Since Rockville is on the Red Line of the DC Metro, there is easy access to/from D.C. for guests interested in exploring the city during their trip. For the U.S. Family Celebration, we are still ironing out some of the finer details (bus to the venue from Rockville, etc.), so please check back in April for more information!
Hotel
We have set up a courtesy room block at the Cambria Hotel in Rockville, MD for Friday, July 12 through Monday, July 15. If you would like to reserve one of these rooms for your stay, please use the link below: https://www.choicehotels.com/reservations/groups/sp26c3?checkInDate=2024-07-12&checkOutDate=2024-07-15&ratePlanCode=BXYUMT There are many other options for lodging near DC, so feel free to stay anywhere with easy access to the Red Line of the DC Metro.
