When Matthew first met Edith in his community group, she instantly captivated him. She was from Uganda, and Matthew had spent six months in Sierra Leone in 2019, which deepened his interest. Although drawn to her, he chose to observe from a distance, unsure of how to approach her. After a few months of small talk, their group took a trip to the Grand Canyon. A playful photo of them sparked some teasing, and Matthew thought about the potential for more. Edith noticed that Matthew liked her; his actions were loud and clear, but she played it cool and waited for him to make a move. When Edith later asked for help on a school project, he jumped at the chance. They spent hours discussing life in Uganda and America, and Matthew mentioned stargazing at Canyon Lake, which excited her. On their way to the lake, Matthew enjoyed the drive but noticed Edith was a bit nervous on the long, winding road. After a brief stop to regroup, they settled in to stargaze, huddled close against the chill. When Edith playfully called him out for liking her, Matthew admitted he did, and they decided to be “intentional friends.” As their connection deepened, Matthew finally asked Edith on a proper date, a week after the stargazing trip, and they had a wonderful time. During a dress shopping trip for an upcoming wedding, he realized he wanted her to be his girlfriend. After some nerves, he asked, and she said yes. While watching a movie at his house, Matthew broached the topic of engagement. Although surprised, Edith was open to the idea, knowing their relationship was rooted in faith. Edith had prayed to be hidden in the Lord, and the man who found her would have to go through God first. Matthew was that man. By March, Matthew bought a ring and proposed a month later at Canyon Lake, where their journey began. Overjoyed, Edith accepted. They married in July and shared their first kiss—messy and perfect. Looking back, Matthew wished he’d asked her out sooner, recognizing how beautifully they complemented each other. Life is not perfect, but with each other, it is more joyful than they both ever imagined. Now, they pray together daily, and Matthew cherishes the way she encourages him to grow closer to Christ. He is committed to leading her in love for the rest of their lives, grateful for the joy she brings.
