DIA is the closest international airport, which is a stunning three hour drive through the front range of the Rockies down to the Collegiate Peaks near Salida.

Colorado Springs Airport (COS)
COS is two hours from Salida, compared to three hours from Denver. You'll drive around Pikes Peak, and through pretty remote countryside. Garden of the Gods is also a nice attraction near the Springs.
