Our Story

December 2012

Marian moved to MI from PA in '94, while Rick was a born Ann Arborite, but it took many years, long relationships, and circuitous paths before one profile reached out to another online... After initially hedging our bets with a coffee date at Sweetwaters, the second date was a HIGH step up: a Scottish play of academics marooned in a bar, PERFORMED in a bar-- and then it was off to the races! Theater and movies and restaurants; shared eccentricities and bad-work-days-made-better by the other; travel, and space carved out for creative projects. And, of course, So. Much. Talking. Between the two of us there exists bountiful stubbornness -- leading to the usual peccadillos and perceived impasses – but these are more than balanced by grace, generosity, and affection. Would the earlier versions of us have been equal to the significant life changes we have encountered together? We think not. We gradually realized we came into each others’ lives at exactly the right time. And now, we are thrilled to exchange vows, supported by the love of our family and friends. A Suitably Fairytale-ish Proposal (December 2014)… Shortly before midnight on New Year’s Eve in Florida, Marian was obliviously irritated about being dragged away from an imminent charades game (“and WHY do we have to go for a walk on the beach NOW, exactly?”) Rick was needlessly adamant. Pretty soon, we strolled along, shoes held above the water, hands swinging together. The waves were hypnotic, timeless. The distant pier was lit up, with a jeweled ferris wheel and various spinning rides: thrilled screams were flung out to the shore, and pre-midnight fireworks cracked the air. It became a beautiful backdrop for Rick’s proposal. “The only thing,” Rick intoned, “we can’t have too long an engagement, or our daughter’s going to be running down the aisle, as a flower girl!” “Hmmmmm, right!” sighed the heavily pregnant Marian, though the image held immediate appeal.
