How We Met

"I'm dying soon..."

It was a Saturday in Late Fall of 2015, the UVA football team had played one of their final games, and Clark was fast approaching his Spring 2016 graduation date. Maria and Clark had both enjoyed their day at tailgates with friends. Maria was heading home, while Clark was headed out to meet up with others. Inevitably, their two paths were crossing. Clark noticed Maria before and decided it was the time to introduce himself. He said, "Hey, give me your phone". She was slightly taken aback by such an abrupt request, but obliged with some hesitation. Trying not to come off as 'just some guy cat calling on The Corner', Clark starts with the usual line of questioning by finding out her name and year in school. Maria let him know she was a 3rd Year and asked about his year. Clark's response, "I'm a 4th Year. I'm dying soon..." They both laughed and it relieved the tension. Clark did his best to get her to turnaround and head out with he and his friends. Unfortunately, he was unable to and they did not speak for some time. They both started to notice they frequented the same gym, libraries, social gatherings, etc. and it seemed like they could not avoid each other anymore. Finally, Clark spoke to Maria one night at Trinity and decided to take it to the next level. She was out with another guy and decided that it would be inappropriate to ditch this guy to spend time with him. This time was different, Clark continued to follow up and nervously asked Maria to a date function. Maria was busy, but committed to inviting him to her next date function. Clark was let down thinking it was a nice way of saying she was not interested. A few days went by when Clark saw his phone light up with a text message from 'Maria (Dying Soon) Barrera'. Maria invited him to a date function. At this point, Clark's 'Dying Soon' turned into a forever date.

The Proposal

“We’re getting married!”

Clark and Maria wanted to do something special for their third anniversary, and decided to head to Charlottesville to spend the weekend at their old stomping ground. They hit all of their old favorite spots, and Maria thought the weekend couldn’t get any better....little did she know, it was just getting started! Before dinner, Clark suggested that they take a walk around UVA. The sun was setting and he opened up a gate that led into one of the gardens behind The Lawn. The path was lined with candles down a terrace that opened up in a circle with a dozen roses at the bottom. When they reached the end of the path, Maria reached down to pick up the roses and when she turned around, Clark was down on one knee! They had a romantic candle-lit dinner at Vivace, talking about the future, and how on Earth Clark managed to pull that off without Maria knowing. Shoutout to Grant and Neal (brothers) for coordinating and photographing the moment beautifully! During dinner, they heard screaming from the bar downstairs as the UVA basketball team was playing Perdue during the playoffs. They headed downstairs with about two minutes left in the game, and UVA tied with seconds on the clock taking it into overtime! Everyone lost it, called them the good luck charm, and when Maria told them they just got engaged, they went wild! UVA went on to win the game and advance to win the NCAA Championship. It was the perfect end to the most perfect beginning. We’re so excited to celebrate the next chapter in our lives with you. See you in Charlottesville!
